TOPIC: Honour Your Mother [Open Heaven for Teens 14 March 2021]

MEMORISE: A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother. Proverbs 15:20

READ: Proverbs 1:8-9

  1. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
  2. For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Deuteronomy 23-25, Mark 14:51-72

MESSAGE:

It is so unfortunate that many children respect their fathers but show disrespect to their mothers because they feel that the mother is always accessible and friendly unlike the fathers who are usually inaccessible and tough. This ought not to be because mothers really labour on their children. Whenever you disrespect your mother, you make her sad. In addition to that, you disobey God because the Bible says in Ephesians 6:2:

“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;”

Note that in the Bible passage above, you are not to honour only your father but also your mother. You must never disrespect your mother because she has a role to play in your journey to greatness. As powerful as Jesus was, He never disrespected His mother. When she requested a favour from Him at the marriage ceremony at Cana, He granted her request even though it was not yet His time to perform a miracle. He did it because He didn’t want to disobey her. Are you obedient to your mother?

ACTION POINT:
Appreciate your mother with a gift and kind words today and if you have been disobedient to her, ask her for forgiveness.

HYMN 11: IN CHRIST ALONE MY HOPE IS FOUND

  1. In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song,
    This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
  2. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on the cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.
  3. There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
  4. No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
    Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
