TOPIC: Total Obedience (Open Heaven for Teens 17 June 2024)

MEMORISE: Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: Exodus 19:5

READ: Deuteronomy 8:1-6

1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

MESSAGE

Being obedient to God means following His commandments; this is an essential element of being in covenant with God. Being obedient is proof of your love for God (John 14:15), and it is an essential part of the Christian faith. Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is every Christian’s role model, was also obedient unto death (Philippians 2:8)

Total obedience is required from every child of God. If there is something called total obedience, then it means there is incomplete obedience, and this is the same as disobedience. For instance, King Saul was sent by God to utterly destroy an entire city. When he went into the city with his soldiers, he destroyed some things but spared the king and some animals. This led to him losing the kingdom to David (1 Samuel 15). Saul obeyed God partially; at least, he went to the city. However, he did not carry out God’s instructions to the letter.

My dear child, there are grave consequences for partial obedience to God’s instructions. The Bible says that he who is guilty of one is guilty of all (James 2:10). If you say that you don’t lie but you only gossip or insult elders, you are as guilty as the one who commits murder. Determine to obey all of God’s commandments from today and you will have peace (Psalm 119:165).

KEY POINT

He who is guilty of one is guilty of all.

HYMN 18 – TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS

1 ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise;
Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”

CHORUS
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

2 O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
Just in simple faith to plunge me
‘Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

3 Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.

4 I’m so glad Learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Saviour, Friend,
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.
