TOPIC: Submit To Authority [Open Heaven for Teens 2 February 2023]

MEMORISE: Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. – Hebrews 13:17

READ: Romans 13:1-7

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

MESSAGE:

Submitting to authority entails obeying instructions to the letter. The Bible established that all constituted authorities are ordained by God, i.e., at home, in religious institutions, et cetera. Therefore, as a child of God, you should submit to them to maintain law and order and a peaceful co-existence within the society.

Obedience to human authority is also obedience to God. You have been commanded to obey all human authorities above you. However, there are times that the policies of an earthly authority might contradict your faith or make you sin against God. For example, when King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 3:16-28 made a decree that his subjects should bow to his erected image, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused because the law of the Lord forbids them to do so (Exodus 20:3-5). At such times, you must ask God for wisdom because He established the earthly authority.

REFLECTION:

Do you outrightly disobey Authorities?

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Leviticus 16-18

HYMN 8 – Forth In Your Name, O Lord, I Go,

  1. Forth in your name, O Lord, I go,
    My daily labor to pursue,
You only, Lord, resolved to know
In all I think or speak or do.
  2. The task your wisdom has assigned
    Here let me cheerfully fulfill;
In all my work your presence find,
And prove your good and perfect will.
  3. You may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost secrets view,
And labor on at your command
And offer all my work to you.
  4. Help me to bear your easy yoke
In ev’ry moment watch and pray,
And still to things eternal look
And hasten to that glorious day.
  5. Then with delight may I employ
All that your bounteous grace has given,
And run my earthly course with joy,
And closely walk with you in heaven.
