MEMORISE: For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. Romans 7:15

READ: Romans 7:14-23

  1. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
  2. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
  3. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
  4. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
  5. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
  6. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
  7. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
  8. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
  9. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
  10. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Luke 23:1-56, 1 Kings 3-5

MESSAGE:

Have you encountered a situation where you promised you wouldn’t do something silly but then a few hours later, you became guilty of that same thing? This indicates that there’s a constant battle between your spirit and flesh. For instance, the day you decide to go on a fast, you will wake that morning with serious hunger pangs, whereas, when you didn’t fast the day before, you didn’t feel hungry until evening. Another example is when you decide to do a personal vigil; you might struggle to stay awake, but if you were watching a late night movie, your eyes would be open until daybreak. Such is the struggle between the flesh and the spirit.

Daily, the flesh wants you to engage in acts that negate your salvation, but you must make up your mind stay in tune with the Spirit of God. Anyone who will walk with God must first crucify the flesh through prayer, fasting, studying of Gods word and obedience to His commandments. If you constantly feed your flesh without missing a meal, it will dominate your spirit but if you feed the spirit, it will subdue the flesh, thereby, making it easier to please God.

KEY POINT:

Obedience to the flesh will make a fellow become an enemy of God.

HYMN: Nearer, My God

  1. Nearer, my God, to Thee,
    nearer to thee!
    E’en though it be a cross
    that raiseth me,
    still all my song shall be,
    nearer, my God,
  2. Though like the wanderer,
    the sun gone down,
    darkness be over me,
    my rest a stone;
    yet in my dreams I’d be
    nearer, my God, to Thee; (2ce)
    nearer to Thee!
  3. There let the way appear,
    steps unto heaven;
    all that Thou sendest me,
    in mercy given;
    angels to beckon me
    nearer, my God, to Thee; (2ce)
    nearer to Thee!
  4. Then with my waking thoughts
    bright with Thy praise,
    out of my stony griefs
    Bethel I’ll raise;
    so by my woes to be
    nearer, my God, to Thee; (2ce)
    nearer to Thee!
  5. Or if, on joyful wing
    cleaving the sky,
    sun, moon, and stars forgot,
    upward I fly,
    still all my song shall be,
    nearer, my God, to Thee; (2ce)
    nearer to Thee!
