TOPIC: Envy Is A Sin [Open Heaven for Teens 23 April 2021]

MEMORISE: Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:26

READ: Romans 13:12-13

  1. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
  2. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Samuel 7-9, Luke 19:1-48

MESSAGE:

Many people think envy is just a character flaw; it is more than that, in fact, it is a sin. Also, envy is lack of love. Anyone envious of another person lacks love. 1 Corinthians 13:4 says: love envieth not. So, anyone who truly loves cannot be envious.

Envy is also a sin because it could lead to murder as in the case of Cain and Abel. They both offered sacrifices to God; while Cain’s was rejected, Abel’s was accepted. Cain then murdered his brother because he was envious of him (Genesis 4:3-8 ). Also, the brothers of Joseph would have killed him because they envied him, but they eventually sold him into slavery. In addition, envy is a sign of lack of faith in God. If you have faith in God, why envy another person? All you need to do is ask your Heavenly Father for anything you need and if that thing is good for you, He will give you even more. However, if He does not want to give you something, no matter how much you envy those who have that thing, He will still not give you.

KEY POINT:

Be content with what you have.

HYMN: CHRISTIAN SEEK NOT YET REPOSE

  1. Christian, seek not yet repose,
    Hear thy guardian angel say,
    “Thou art in the midst of foes:
    Watch and pray!
  2. Principalities and powers,
    Mustering their unseen array,
    Wait for thine unguarded hours:
    “Watch and pray!
  3. Gird thy heavenly armour on,
    Wear it every night and day,
    Ambushed lies the evil one:
    “Watch and pray!
  4. Hear the victors who overcame;
    Still they mark each warrior’s way,
    All with one sweet voice exclaim,
    “Watch and pray!
  5. Hear, above all, hear thy Lord,
    Him thou lovest to obey;
    Hide within thy heart His word,
    “Watch and pray!
  6. Watch, as if on that alone
    Hung the issue of the day;
    Pray, that help may be sent down:
    “Watch and pray!”
