TOPIC: Body Shaming I [Open Heaven for Teens 24 April 2022]

MEMORISE: And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 1:31

READ: Psalms 139:13-16

  1. For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
  2. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
  3. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
  4. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Luke 19:29-48, 2 Samuel 10-12

MESSAGE:

Body shaming is the act of mocking or criticizing one’s or another persons physical appearance. For instance, a plus-sized young lady could hate herself for being that way. Some people hate or insult an aspect of other peoples body parts. This is an act of bullying and should not be encouraged at all because it leads to psychological and emotional trauma. A lot of persons have low self-esteem because they have been body shamed by themselves or others.

Our memory verse for today tells us that everything that God made was very good. In grammar, when you say something is very good, it could mean excellent or perfect. Hence, you are perfect and excellent whether you have a big belly, flat nose, big head or wide lips. God made you beautiful and you need to see yourself in that light. The impression you have about yourself will reflect in the way you talk and act. Therefore, combat this problem in your heart through the word of God. No wonder the Bible says as a person thinks in his heart, so is he/she. When negative thoughts about your body come to you, look in the mirror and say to yourself, I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalms 139:14 ).

ACTION POINT:

Think and speak positive things about yourself.

HYMN: Just As I Am

  1. Just as I am, without one plea,
but that Thy blood was shed for me,
and that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
Oh Lamb of God, I come, I come.
  2. Just as I am, and waiting not
to rid my soul of one dark blot,
to Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
Oh Lamb of God, I come, I come.
  3. Just as I am, though tossed about
with many a conflict, many a doubt,
    fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
  4. Just as I am poor, wretched, blind
Sight, riches, healing of the mind
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find
Oh Lamb of God I come,
  5. Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
    wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
    because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
  6. Just as I am Thy love unknown
    Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea Thine alone,
Oh Lamb of God I come, I come.
  7. Just as I am, of that free love,
    The breadth, length, depth and
    height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
Oh Lamb of God I come, I come.
