TOPIC: Dangers Of Covetousness (Open Heaven for Teens 26 August 2024)

MEMORISE: Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. Philippians 4:11

READ: Philippians 4:11-13

11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

MESSAGE:

Covetousness is the desire to have what others have, and it can lead a fellow down a dangerous path if care is not taken. One of the most famous verses about covetousness is found in Exodus 20:17; this verse is clear in its message:

“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”

When you covet what others have, you become focused on what you do not have, instead of being grateful for what you have. Colossians 3:5 says:

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:”

From the text above, we can see that covetousness can become an idol in a fellow’s life, taking the place of God and leading him or her down a path away from Him.

The dangers of covetousness are numerous. Covetousness can lead to envy and jealousy, which can destroy relationships and cause divisions. It can also lead to a life of dissatisfaction, unhappiness, greed, and selfishness.

Beloved, rather than covet what others have, be grateful for all God has blessed you with, and trust in His provision for your future.

ACTION POINT

Mention the blessings of God in your life and thank Him for each.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Job 20:1-22:30, 2 Corinthians 1:1-11

HYMN 37: Let Us With A Gladsome Mind

  1. Let us, with a gladsome mind,
    Praise the Lord, for He is kind;
    For His mercies shall endure
    Ever faithful, ever sure.
  2. Let us sound His name abroad,
    For of gods He is the God;
    For His mercies shall endure,
    Ever faithful, ever sure.
  3. He with all-commanding might
    Filled the new-made world with light;
    For His mercies shall endure,
    Ever faithful, ever sure.
  4. All things living He doth feed;
    His full hand supplies their need;
    For His mercies shall endure,
    Ever faithful, ever sure.
  5. He His chosen race did bless
    In the wasteful wilderness;
    For His mercies shall endure,
    Ever faithful, ever sure.
  6. He hath with a pious eye
    Looked upon our misery;
    For His mercies shall endure,
    Ever faithful, ever sure.
  7. Let us with gladsome mind
    Praise the Lord, for He is kind;
    For His mercies shall endure,
    ever faithful, ever sure.
