TOPIC: A Lesson From Goliath [Open Heaven for Teens 9 May 2022]

MEMORISE: Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: Proverbs 24:33

READ: 1 Samuel 17:41-43

  1. And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
  2. And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
  3. And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: John 2:1-25, 1 Kings 19-20

MESSAGE:

Yesterday, we looked at Davids attitude towards goal-getting. Today, we will be examining Goliaths attitude to goal-getting. At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him and probably relaxed. I can imagine it was at this point that he let down his guard, seeing that his opponent had no weapon. He must have put aside his huge sword, dropped his shield and thrown both hands in the air to have a really good laugh before cursing David by his gods. What a scene that must have been! The first lesson from this story is that you must never underestimate the enemy. Some teenagers are overconfident like Samson and keep toying with sin. They tell the opposite sex that God will prevent them from falling into temptation because they are Spirit-filled, whereas, the Bible already told us to “abstain from all appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Similarly, a little indulgence in idleness or pleasure could make you poor (Proverbs 6:10).

Another lesson is that you must avoid pride at all costs. Goliath was proud and boasted by his gods while David confronted him in the name of the Lord. When God sees that you rely on Him for everything, He will definitely throw His weight behind you as a form of defense.

PRAYER POINT

Father, please don’t let me fall prey to the enemy through pride or carelessness, in Jesus name.

HYMN: O God Our Help In Ages Past

  1. O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
    and our eternal home;
  2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
    Thy saints have dwelt secure.
    Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
    and our defence is sure.
  3. Before the hills in order stood,
    or earth received her frame,
    from everlasting Thou art God,
    to endless years the same.
  4. A thousand ages in Thy sight
    are like an evening gone,
short as the watch that ends the
    night
    before the rising sun.
  5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
    bears all its sons away.
They fly forgotten, as a dream
    dies at the opening day.
  6. O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
be Thou our guard while troubles last,
    and our eternal home.
