A FATHER’S COUNSEL

Key Verse: “A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke” (Proverbs 13:1)

TEXT: Proverbs 13:1-6

If Samson and Solomon had obeyed their father’s instructions, they would have left a better history behind. Both of them would have lived fulfilled lives. The parents of Samson dissuaded him from yoking himself unequally with unbelievers but he would not obey. He hooked up with Delilah, a harlot, and a Philistine, who brought his life and ministry to an abrupt end. David instructed Solomon to serve God with a perfect and willing mind.

Solomon deviated from the instruction. He forsook the law of the Lord and the outlandish women turned his heart away from God.

Friend, it is foolhardy to think that the generational gap should make children despise their parents’ instructions.

Socialization, educational attainment, and accumulation of wealth cannot replace the wealth of experience passed to us through our father’s biblical instructions. We honor our parents when we accept their advice and admonitions. They make us to be wiser. There must be the desire to listen to our parent’s instructions and comply with them as long as they are in consonance with the Bible.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to obey my parents’ Instructions.
