OPENING PRAYER: Father, let your Holy Spirit in me continue to assist in handling issues and pressure of life.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The leaders should remind the members on different types of prayer and why believers are called to the active life of praying.
MEMORY VERSE: “And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” 1 Samuel 30:6 (KJV)
BIBLE TEXT: 1 Samuel 30:1-6 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
2 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
5 And David’s two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: Life throws curve balls at us at whole time. There are large ones that really knock us off centre and there are small ones that put us off balance on a daily basis. For the most part, we can’t control these irritating events that life throws at us but there is only one thing we can control and that is our response to these events, i.e. encouraging ourselves in those nagging situations of life.
LESSON AIM: To make members understand the need to be courteous when reacting to nagging events in one’s life and reasons to seek God’s face
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able:
- Beware of overreaction under pressure.
- Know the need of seeking God under pressure.
TEXT REVIEW: Acts 12:5-16
a. Believers can face challenges, but intensive prayer brings end to the challenges.
b. There is always divine visitation whenever we are facing difficulties.
c. No barriers to God’s involvement whenever we are facing challenge.
d. Effective prayers work wonders.
LESSON OUTLINE ONE: BEWARE OF OVERREACTING UNDER PRESSURE
It is important to know that everyone goes through tough times, staying cool, calm when passing through turbulent times is not always easy but it is a great virtue to desire and acquire. A calm mind when going through difficult times helps you to think clearly, to analyse situations positively more accurately and to make a better decisions. 1 Samuel 30:8.
Remaining level headed under pressure, it is all about responding rather than reacting, being proactive instead of reactive. It is a sign of strength, resilience and faith in God. Philippians 4:6.
DANGERS OF OVERREACTING UNDER PRESSURE.
- You are likely to become judgemental.
- Your response to issues may be calamitous. 1 Samuel 14:37-45
- Loss of favourable helpers of destiny. 1 Samuel 30:11-18.
- Loss of divine signal and can bring curse to one’s destiny. Numbers 13:30-33,14:1-14
LESSON OUTLINE TWO: SEEK THE LORD UNDER PRESSURE
Seeking after God should be the most important priority in believer’s life. No matter what pressure that come into the life of a Christian, we should be able to handle them properly if we maintain this priority above all else. Proverbs 1.5-6
HOW TO SEEK THE LORD UNDER PRESSURE?
- Having personal relationship with God. To seek after God means to have an intimate personal relationship with God. Psalm 63:1
- Desire more of Him. Philippians 3.10
- To feel the vacuum
- Be prayerful. Luke 10:1
- Be calm and be intentional about changes desired.
SUMMARY: Believers should beware of overreaction under pressure and understand the need to be courteous when reacting to nagging events.
CONCLUSION. It’s okay to feel pressured, it’s okay to feel stressed. These feelings are part of being human. The key is not to let these feelings dictate your actions.
