LESSON FIFTY ONE (51)
TOPIC: ARE YOU A SINGLE PARENT? THERE IS HOPE FOR YOU
HOUSE FELLOWSHIP ANTHEM
- I love this family of God,
So closely knitted into one,
They have taken me into their arms
And `am so glad to be
A part of this great family - I bless this family of God,
So greatly prospered by the Lord,
They have taken me into their arms
And `am so glad to be
A part of this great family - I know this family of God,
So deeply rooted in the word,
They have taken me into their arms
And `am so glad to be
A part of this great family - I see this family of God,
So highly lifted above all,
They have taken me into their arms
And `am so glad to be
A part of this great family - Come, join this family of God,
So highly favoured by the Lord,
They have taken me into their arms
And `am so glad to be
A part of this great family.
MEMORY VERSE: “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in His holy habitation.” Psalm 68:5
TEXT: Genesis 21:15-21
15 – And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
16 – And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
17 – And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
18 – Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
19 – And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
20 – And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
21 – And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
INTRODUCTION: It is the plan of God that both parents should in togetherness nurse their children unto adulthood. However, there are some circumstances both within or beyond their control that may crop up and render either of them a single parent. And these are death, divorce and out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 21:15-21
i. When the water that Hagar had for Ishmael, her son, got finished
ii. She cried, God sent an angel to her and opened her eyes to see the hidden well that was around her.
iii. She fetched it and gave her son to drink and live
LESSON OUTLINE:
SINGLE PARENTS WHO WERE HELPED BY GOD:
HAGAR: Today’s bible text explains how Hagar was pushed out with her son by Abraham. But God came to their aid and the seemingly ugly situation became a pleasant one. – Genesis 21:17-19
THE WIDOW OF ONE OF THE SONS OF THE PROPHETS: 2 Kings 4:1-7 – The Lord helped this widow where the creditor came to take her two sons for slavery.
THE WIDOW OF ZAREPHATH: God, through Prophet Elijah did not allow death and hunger to snatch away the son of the widow. – 1 Kings 17:10-23
THE WIDOW OF NAIN: Luke 7:11-15 – Jesus Christ raised the only son of the widow of Nain from death.
Also it is still not the end of life for those out-of-wedlock pregnant ladies. Just repent of your sin and accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. He can turn the situation around for good. Abortion is not an option as it will further compound your sin before God.
ACTIVITY: Is God interested in helping the single parents?
SUMMARY: God is the rewarder!
CONCLUSION: Single parenthood is not the end of the road, brace up and hope in God and He will turn the situation around in your favour. Look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. – Hebrews 12:2
