LESSON FIVE (05)
TOPIC: THE SANCTIFIER: HOLY SPIRIT
BIBLE TEXT John 14:16-17
[16]And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
[17]Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
MEMORY VERSE: 2 Thessalonian 2:13
“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:”
LESSON AIM: To let the children know the personality of the Holy Spirit CENTRAL TRUTH: Holy Spirit is the third person in trinity and the sanctifier.
INTRODUCTION: The Holy Spirit is a person and as a Christian, we need to know that the Holy Spirit has been a part of the Trinity of God since the beginning of time. The believers at Ephesus were aware of their need to live a better life, but they were not aware of the power of the Holy Spirit to enable them to do so. Their experience demonstrates the truth that without the Holy Spirit we cannot please God. Thus, without the Holy Spirit we are incomplete Christians. In fact, Scripture tells us in John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” To know the Holy Spirit is to know the characteristics of the Holy Spirit.
STUDY GUIDE
A. IDENTITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
In Acts 19:1-2, Paul came across some men who were confused about the Holy Spirit. Many today are just as confused. Some say that the Holy Spirit is nothing more than a feeling or experience.
What does the Bible tell us about the identity of the Holy Spirit? He goes by many names.
1 The “Comforter”-John 14:16
2 The Spirit of the Father”-Matthew 10:20
3 The Spirit of the Lord”-Luke 4:18
4 The Spirit of the living God”-2 Corinthians 3:3
5 The Spirit of grace”-Hebrews 10:29
6 The Spirit of Truth”-John 14:17
7 The Spirit of Christ-1 Peter 1:11
8 The Spirit of God”-Genesis 1:2; Matthew 3:16
B. HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT SANCTIFY?
The Holy Spirit (who is the Spirit of the Living God) comes to live inside every person that believes in Jesus and has been spiritually born again.
When He does. He begins to sanctify them to make them more like Jesus overtim Where the are false beliefs, harmful thinking, emotional brokenness, ungodly behavior, bad habits, etc
1 He lead to truth,
- Godly thinking,
- Emotional healing,
4 Godly behaviour
5 Good habits, etc. - The Holy S sanctifies by washing the heart and renewing the mind (Tit 3:4-7)
- The Holy Spirit sanctifies by assuring the Believer of the indwelling presence of Jesus Christ (1 John 3.24).
- The Holy Spirit sanctilies by helping the Believer understand the Scriptures (1 Cor 2:10 16, Eph 3-3-6).
- The Holy Font sanctifies by attesting to the reality of Believer’s faith, brands the Believer as a property of God’s, and guarantees his inheritance in the future completion of salvation (2 Cor 1:21-22: 5:5)
C. HE IS A PERSON IN THE GODHEAD
- He speaks (1 Timothy 4.1).
- He is insulted Hebrews 10.29).
- He forbids (Acts 16.5)
- He possesses knowledge (1 Corinthians 2:9-11).
- He possesses will (1 Corinthians 12:11).
- He is sinned against (Acts 51,1 Thessalonians 5.19, Matthew 12:31).
- He grieves (Ephesians 4:29).
- He guides (2 Peter 1:20-21)
CONCLUSION: The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit has thoughts and a will. The Holy Spirit can be greved and even insulted. But He can also be pleased as we rely on Him to give us the strength to live in a way that’s consistent with God’s plan for us. The Holy Spirit thinks about believers in Christ and responds to them. He knows the Father’s thoughts and communicates those thoughts to them. When you pray or read the Bible and sense God speaking to you through that, that is an example of the Holy Spirit at work in your life
LIFE APPLICATION: Let us always respect what the Holy Spirit has revealed about Himself.
INVITATION. Holy Spirit has interest in you, come to Him now and surrender to Him.
