LESSON AIM the Childeknow that sanctification is a must for every child of God CENTRAL TRUTHSanctification is another kay In pleasing God
INTRODUCTION Even though salvation begins in a moment, it continues for a lifetime Christians are not merely forgiven of their sins and allowed to continue walking “according to the flesh as they once did (Rom. 8.12-13). We have been rescued from who we were and given a new identity in Christ as members of His family (Rom 8.14-16). As children of God, Christian begin to want to be like Him. Just like a child who desires to please their parents, so Christians desire to live faithful lives in the Spirit. We start to act like, talk like, and live like our heavenly Father. Moreover, living like Him is dependent on the Spirit at work in us, cleansing us of all unrighteousness. The Spirit becomes our guide, as we seek to put off our old ways and move forward in the new life God has given us. Like clay being pressed into a mold, we are being shaped to look like Christ, with anything that does not fit being cut away. This pursuit of holiness is the lifelong calling for all Christians. Because we have been changed inwardly, we have new desires, behaviours, and pursuits.
In today’s lesson, we will discuss what sanctification means, how we can attain the level of been sanctified and more
STUDY GUIDE
A. WHAT DOES SANCTIFICATION MEAN? 1 Cor. 6:11
To sanctify an object means to wash, cleanse, consecrate or set it aside for a special purpose. Hence, Sanctification is what happens after salvation – its the continual process of turning from our old, sinful ways to become more like Jesus. In other words, its a person’s growth in righteousness
What Does It Mean To Be Sanctified?
- It begins with being set free from sin. Romans 6:22
2 Involves God Working in Our Hearts. Romans 8:11, Philippians 1.6. Sanctification is an ongoing process that God works in my heart to change my desires. It begins with God’s forgiveness of my sins, and then it continues throughout my whole life as I walk in relationship with the Lord and learn how to become more like Christ. - Also, sanctification refers to the state or process of being set apart, ie. “made holy”, as
a vessel, full of the Holy Spirit of God. 2 Cor. 7-1 - Sanctification means that self(attitudes, desires, self-will, etc.) is crucified and that you are no longer carmal(in your thoughts, actions, or mind). Rom. 8:6-8
- So, you get filled with the Holy Ghost, Galatian 5:25
- This is also known as the second work of grace. Luka 10:20
- In sanctification it is higher level of purging God does because you’re no longer camal.
Also, God will still show you things about yourself, but it should never be carnal. Heb. 12:14.
B. SIGNS OF SANCTIFICATION
In these verses Paul describes the experience of sanctification: Colossians 1:9-12
- Knowledge of God’s will
- Spiritual wisdom, understanding
- Obedience to His Word
- Fruitfulness in good works
- Ever deepening relationship with God in prayer and assurance
- Ability to persevere
- Joyful and thankful heart
- Hope of eternal life in heaven
WAYS TO BE SANCTIFIED
Thers sen these ways to son of these three categories come several other means that lGod uses to change Christians.
- The Word of God. Jon 17:17 John 15:3. As we read the instruction of the Bible, we are urged to obey them, and resolving to do so, with God’s help, makes us grow in holiness. Being reposed to the Scriptures also exposes us to the nature of God
- The work of the spirit. The work of the Holy Spint in our lives Christian characteris described as “the fruit of the Spirit Gal 5:22-23 Peter talks of “the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ. 1 Pet 12
- The fellowship of believers Timo 2:22. Heb. 10:24. Under the category of fellowship, we can also include the church/groups to which Christians belong. It is in community with them that some of the most marked changes take place.
CONCLUSION: If you have been born again, sanctification is an experience that is for you today. It is required for all Christians, for God has commanded, “Be ye holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15) Consecrate your all to Him, and pray until the experience is yours. What a wonderful difference it will make in your lifef
LIFE APPLICATION: Sanctification is not for unbelievers. Sanctification is for those who have been saved, those who know their sins have been forgiven. Where do you stand?
INVITATION: Jesus Christ is knocking the door of your heart today, kindly open for Him to come in
