SUMMARY OF LESSONS 39-44
LESSON THIRTY NINE (39)
TOPIC: SUSTAINING THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THROUGH THE WORD

BIBLE TEXT: 2 Timothy 3:16-17

MEMORY VERSE:2 Tim 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

LESSON AIM: To learn how we can keep the fire of the Holy Spirit through the Word and how to go about reading the Word.

CENTRAL TRUTH: The Word of God is essential to every believer as newborn babies desire milk. We must grow and sustain the fire of the Holy Spirit 1 Peter 2:2-3

INTRODUCTION:Jesus desires that His followers be hot and burning for Him, you should not be lukewarm [Revelation 3:15-16]. One of the ways of keeping the fire of the Holy Spirit burning is through studying the Word of God. They say what you fill your mind with which influences the way you act. The famous Bobo Doll experiment by Badura et al between 1961 and 1963 shows how violent media influenced children’s behavior. You will notice that the kind of things you watch, read and listen to can affect your behavior. Since we have established this fact, reading the Word of God consistently will also influence you. You will find yourself conscious of the Word of God. When you study Jesus you will be able to make decisions on “what will Jesus do?”, and you will find yourself imitating Him.

STUDY GUIDE
A.) HOW DOES THE WORD OF GOD HELP TO SUSTAIN THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

  1. It influences your actions – We have established that what you consume in your mind influences you. But rather than being influenced by the world, influence your mind with the word. That way you will find yourself acting like the word.
By behaving according to the word, your actions conform to the holy spirit and it helps you follow His instructions. [Romans 12:2]
  2. Overcome temptation – The word of God helps us to overcome temptation. When you are tempted and you don’t know what to do, you can refer back to the Word. Knowing the Word helps you in difficult situations. We saw how Jesus used the Word to resist the temptations of the devil. [Luke 4:1-13]
  3. It makes you hear God- Sometimes we always think that hearing God will be a clear audible voice, but hearing God starts from studying His Word. He communicates to us through His Word. It makes us sensitive to know when the Holy Spirit is reaching out to us. To also discern the voice of God from any other voice is to know which voice conforms to His Word because God does not go against His Word. [1 Samuel 3:21]
  4. It makes you pray – Prayer is also as important as studying the Word. The Word of God can inspire you to pray, it gives you something to pray about (prayer points) and it even teaches us how to pray. And this is important in keeping you sensitive to the Holy Spirit and keeping the fire burning [Matthew 6:9-13]
  5. Helps to abstain from sin – Keeping the fire burning also means avoiding sin because sin grieves the Holy Spirit. God’s word is a guide that helps a believer to make the right decisions. It strengthens you and helps you understand what to do and what not to do. [Ephesians 4:30, Romans 15:4, Psalm 119:105]
  6. It makes you hungry for more – The more you study, the more you hunger for more knowledge of the word of God and hungry for the things of God.

B.) HOW TO READ THE WORD
According to 2 Timothy 2:15, we are to “rightly divide the word of truth Some believers read the Bible without care and fall into error. It is important to rightly study the Word to prevent a situation where one falls into heresy. There are some heretic doctrines out there that resulted as a result of misinterpreting the Word. It is first important to note that the Holy Spirit’s help is key in understanding the Bible. After all, it is inspired by him.

The following are factors to consider when studying the Word of God.

  1. Observation: Observations on who is talking, who wrote the text, and to whom it was directed. Observe the words, sentences, and language. Use a dictionary for any word you don’t understand, all these play a part in understanding the text.
  2. Context: Always endeavor to read a part in its full context. A part is from a whole. Don’t just extract a part without knowing the whole. What was happening before a statement was made and what events led to the actions that Occur.
  3. Cross-referencing: Sometimes you need to use other passages to understand a passage. Sometimes people in the Bible will quote other parts of the Bible especially if it is the fulfillment of a prophecy. It is important to cross-reference also because you can explain some passages in the Bible using other passages in the Bible.
  4. External references: External references like Strong’s dictionary, historical references, and comments from theologians or pastors also help in your Bible study. Historical references, for instance, help you to understand the Jewish or Roman culture at that time which will facilitate your understanding of why some things happened in the Bible, it gives you an in-depth understanding of time context. Or if you’re struggling to understand a passage, you can refer to comments or explanations from trusted theologians or pastors who have given a good explanation of such passage.
  5. Translations: Some translations can be archaic or ambiguous. There are so many translations. If one translation is difficult to understand, try using other translations.

C.) HOW TO PLAN A WORD STUDY SCHEDULE
I. Daily: Try as much as possible to fix your study schedule every day. Just like you eat daily food, eat the Word daily.

  1. Morning/evening: As teenagers who have their afternoons- occupied with activities or errands, early mornings or evenings are a good time to study the Word.
  2. Plan with manuals or audio messages: You may not exactly read a passage every time, you can use manuals like the Teens Open Heavens or audio teachings of a trusted teacher of the Word.
  3. As you observe daily activities: This can happen for instance, if you’re using an audio Bible or audio teaching. Maybe as you’re going for a walk along with the neighborhood, or in a vehicle, airplane, train traveling a long distance, or if you’re cleaning or performing any other activity that doesn’t need your full attention, you can listen to your audio bible or teaching during this period.
  4. Order: This may be transitioning from the old to the new testament, Using a period to study the gospels or the acts of the apostles. You should follow a particular order and not just read anyhow. This makes it easier to understand the context and encourages consistency.
  5. Prayer time: It is suitable to do your study time with your prayer time.

DISCUSSION: Can you finish the Bibłe? Have you finished it before and if you have, do you need to read it again? Can you have enough of the Bible?

LIFE APPLICATION: Just as how the media is shaping the minds of the youth today through continuous consumption, let the Word of God shape your mind through continuous daily consumption. Endeavor to make a study plan and read the Word every day to keep the fire of the Holy Spirit burning.

CONCLUSION: There are so many distractions today. The development of new media has indoctrinated many teenagers with its secular content. To resist this and to conform to the Word of God we must make a conscious and deliberate effort to study the Word and be consistent. Pray for God to help you as you make effort to study his Word daily.

INTRODUCTION: Prayer is the gateway to harnessing and sustaining the fire of the Holy Spirit. We must be willing to pray at all times to be able to manifest God’s will. Our Lord Jesus Christ frequently prayed, even before going to the cross; He prayed more for grace for the journey ahead. From our text, we are commanded to pray without ceasing and rejoice forever even as we give thanks to God Almighty to align with His will for us.

LESSON FORTY ONE (41)
TOPIC: SUSTAINING THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT 3 (THROUGH SERVICE)

BIBLE TEXTS: Ephesians 6:7; Colossians 3: 23; Romans 1:9

MEMORY VERSE: Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh: not with eye-service, as men-pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord
Christ. Colossians 3:22-24

LESSON AIM: To be continually filled with the fire of the Holy Ghost, we have to be of service unto our maker.

CENTRAL TRUTH: We render acceptable service unto God by doing what He wants, and how, when and where He wants it done. We must be available to Him and must be willing to do whatever He requires of us.

INTRODUCTION: In Ephesians 6:7, Paul’s instruction encourages responsibility and integrity. Can you be trusted to do your best, even when no one is around to supervise you? Do you work hard and with enthusiasm? Remember that no matter whom you work for or who works for you, the one you ultimately should want to please is your Father in heaven.

STUDY GUIDE
1.) WHAT IS SERVICE UNTO GOD?: To serve God is to serve others and is the greatest form of charity: the pure love of Christ. Jesus Christ said: A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.(John 13:34). Jesus said, “I am among you as he that serveth'” (Luke 22:27). As true followers of Jesus, we also must serve others. Service is helping others who need assistance. Christlike service grows out of genuine love for the Saviour and of love and concern for those whom He gives us opportunities and direction to help. It means you are doing something primarily for the benefit and goodwill of another person or group of people. When we serve, we look outside of ourselves, beyond our own problemns, and seek to bring value to
others.

CLASS ACTIVITY l: Is serving people the same as serving God? Explain.

2.) HOW DO I SERVE GOD?
Perhaps you grew up with God and spiritual faith in your life, or you’re new to the experience. Regardless of where you are on your path of faith, there are plenty of ways you can serve God every day. From actively going out of your way to serve Him, to simply having love in your heart and being a good person; serving God can be done in almost every aspect of your life. So, how can I serve God?

  1. DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD: To start serving God, you have to discover who God is to you. Is your relationship with God something you fall back on in your time of need? Or is He someone you communicate with every day?
  2. PRAY TO GOD: You don’t have to be in a church or on your knees to pray; you can just talk to God as a form of prayer. You can find specific prayers for almost any situation in your life, or you can simply ask God to help you with your problem, pray for guidance. peace, or any number of things that are on your mind.
  3. STUDY YOUR BIBLE: Reading your bible, or whatever text is considered sacred in your religion is another form of prayer and service to God. Reading the text can give you guidance if you are feeling astray, it can inspire you, and even give you some lessons on how to serve God.
  4. GIVE THANKS TO GOD: Remember to take moment sometimes and give thanks for what God has given you, or helped you get on your own.
  5. GET STRENGTH FROM GOD: There’s a proverb about a single pair of footprints in the
sand during the worst points in your life. And the message of the proverb is that when you thought you were on your own during those hardest parts of your life, God carried you through. Serving God can come from letting him give you strength when you need it most by simply putting your faith in him.
  6. PRAY WITH OTHERS: Maybe you have a friend who needs some help or is having a
hard time, or it’s someone you don’t know very well. Praying with them, if they’re open to it, or even for them can go a long way.
  7. PRAY WITH YOUR FAMILY: A family that prays together stays together. Serving God
isn’t always an individual thing. When you and your family give thanks and all have faith, you are serving God together.
  8. BE A MENTOR: You can serve God by being a mentor or positive role model to someone who may be younger than you, or even around your age.
  9. GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO HELP SOMEONE IN NEED: You can always serve God by being the Good Samaritan. If you see someone in need try to help them.
  10. START GOING TO CHURCH: What better way to serve God? Even if you are unable to go, you could always find a time or a couple of times like a week to quietly reflect, pray, and read your Bible.
11 SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT GOD: Tell other people about Him or invite them to church. Don’t be ashamed of God, He’s your creator.
  11. STAY HUMBLE ABOUT YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Serving God doesn’t mean toting your accomplishments and good fortune. It means thanking Him for what he has blessed you with and remaining humble about it.
  12. LET GOD INFORM YOUR ACTIONS: When you are frustrated or in a hurry to be somewhere or accomplish a task it can be easy to lose sight of how to serve God, but pause and think about how He would want you to act.
  13. FORGIVE THOSE WHO HAVE WRONGED YOU: God is the ultimate forgiver. He forgives us of our sins and transgressions. And while forgiveness isn’t always easy when you’ve been wronged, this is one of the best ways to serve God, and in turn, yourself.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Explain Rom.1:9 and give examples.

LIFE APPLICATION: Remember a time when someone helped you out with something? Well, now it’s your turn. Do the same for someone who could use your help.

CONCLUSION: We aren’t to work while others watch, then slack off when alone. We are to render service as though we are working for God, who watches at all times.

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Peter 1:15-16; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Romans 12:1

MEMORY VERSE: 1 Pet 1:16 “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy”

Being pure and holy is part of sustaining the fire of the Holy Spirit. Maintaining holiness comes as a challenge to many. But as Children of God, He has given us the grace and power to work on the path of holiness. We will explore this and much more in today’s lesson. [2 Corinthians 12:9]

STUDY GUIDE
A) HOW IS HOLINESS/PURITY IMPORTANT IN SUSTAINING THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

  1. It pleases Him: Sin grieves the Holy Spirit. But holiness and purity please Him [Ephesians 4:30]
  2. It makes one sensitive to the Holy Spirit: The more a person stays in disobedience to God, the less sensitive he becomes to the Holy Spirit, drifting farther and farther away. But if a person stays in purity and holiness, they are sensitive and conscious of the guidance of the Holy Spirit. [1 Thessalonians 5:19]
  3. It makes us useful and effective vessels of the Holy Spirit for God’s purpose: A pure person is a suitable vessel for the Holy Spirit to do the work of God. Working for God is part of keeping the fire of the Holy Spirit burning, and how can we be of service if we are not pure vessels?
It is therefore important to remain a pure vessel. (2 Timothy 2:20-26).
  4. It makes you stronger: A person who consistently lives in obedience to God’s word and maintains purity becomes stronger in his walk with the Holy Spirit. He becomes more mature, knows what he ought and ought not to do, and is less susceptible. He shall not be moved [Psalm 15:2-6]

B. HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN HOLINESS/PURITY?

  1. By studying the Word: The word of God tells us what to do and what not to do. Consistent study of the word also influences our minds and actions, helping us to remain in obedience to the word of God. [Psalm 119:91
  2. Prayer: Prayer builds us up and provides a way out of temptation. Also, we pray to God to help us live holy. His grace is sufficient for us [Matthew 26:41, Philippians 4: 13]
  3. Avoid consuming ungodly things: The world is polluted with ungodly things, on social media, television, books, magazines e.t.c. We must abstain from such things to avoid their ungodly influence on our thinking and behavior (Romans 12:2).
  4. Abstain from sexual immorality: Abstain from all forms of sexual immorality whether it is fornication, adultery, pornography, or engaging in perverse talks. [1 Corinthians 6:13, Hebrews 13:4, 1 Corinthians 6: 18].
  5. Be alert and conscious: Be alert, let your focus remain on God, and do not be distracted in your walk with God because the devil is roaming looking for who to devour [1 Peter 5:8].
  6. Self-control and Resilience: It is important to have self-control at all times. It is also important to be strong and enduring, not give up on God and take a path that will cause you to sin[1 Corinthians 10:13].
  7. Repentance: When we err or fall into sin, we can ask for forgiveness, pick up and continue in our walk with God. [1 John 1:91]
  8. Love: The love of God causes you not to sin against him but to do his will and please him. Also if you love your neighbor, you will not desire to do evil to them. [John 14:15, 1 John 5:3, Romans 13:8-10, 1 John 2:3-6]

C.) ACTS OF HOLINESS/ PURITY

  • Sexual abstinence until marriage and faithfulness to one’s spouse.
  • Obeying the voice of God

  • Faithfulness
  • Truthfulness
  • Godly love
  • Self-control e.t.c.

DISCUSSION: If a Christian sins, does the Holy Spirit leave him?

LIFE APPLICATION: From now on, in every aspect of our lives; whether school, at home, in church e.t.c, we should endeavor to live in Holiness and purity all times to keep the fire of the Holy Spirit burning and grow in our walk with Him.

CONCLUSION: We have established the significance of holiness in sustaining the fire of the Holy Spirit. Overall, it is important to note this cannot be done with human strength alone. Pray that God helps you and gives you the grace to live holy. With the help of God, a holy and pure life is POSSIBLE!

LESSON FORTY FOUR(44)
TOPIC: SUSTAINING THE FIRE OF HOLY SPIRIT 6 (THROUGH OBEDIENCE)

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Kings 2:3; James 1:22

MEMORY VERSE: Deuteronomy 28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:

LESSON AIM: To understand the role of obedience in sustaining the fire of the Holy Spirit and to grow spiritually.

CENTRAL TRUTH: Obedience is important in our walk with God. It is necessary that as believers we obey and observe all that God has told us to do.

INTRODUCTION: Obedience is total compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority. According to 1 Samuel 15:22, Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. It will be better for us to obey God because God knows what is best for us than for us to make a mistake we would regret, or come back making excuses and asking for forgiveness altogether.
It is much easier for us to obey the instructions of God.

STUDY GUIDE
A) HOW OBEDIENCE HELPS IN SUSTAINING THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

  1. It pleases the Holy Spirit- Disobedience to God’s word grieves the Holy Spirit. However, obedience pleases Him. [Ephesians 4:30].
  2. Overcome trials- You overcome difficulties and tests by obeying the word of God. Total obedience and submission to God cannot make you fall, but only strengthen you and keep you focused. [James 4:7].
  3. More responsibilities: The more you obey God’s instructions, the more tasks he gives you. The more he engages you in doing tasks for his kingdom, the more it Keeps you on your toes and burning for Him. [Matthew 25:2 1 -23]
  4. Direction: Sometimes we think we know what is best for us and do things our way. However, this can often lead us to regret. We must obey and trust in the leading of the Holy Spirit and God’s word at all times if we want to go in the right direction. Total trust and obedience to the Holy Spirit and the word of God will give us direction in our walk with God, making the right choices and fostering a good relationship with the Holy Spirit which makes us alert and burning [Proverbs 3:5-6, 2 Timothy 3:16].

B) ACTS OF OBEDIENCE/WAYS TO OBEY GOD

  1. Total compliance and Submission: Obedience must be total, it should not be partial. [1 Samuel 15:1-22]. Complying, adherence, and heeding to the word of God: By adhering, complying, and submitting yourself to the instructions in the Bible, you are obeying God.[ Joshua 1:8, James 1:22].
  2. Obedience to parents: Obedience to your parents is obedience to God. God brought you onto earth through your parents and commands that you obey them. [Ephesians 6:1, Colossians 3:20, Proverbs 1:8, Exodus 20:12].
  3. Obedience to authority: The Bible indicates that there is no authority except God, and those which exist are established by God. And therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God. [Romans 13:1-7, 1 Peter 2:13-14, Titus 3:1].
  4. Love: Love for God will lead you into obeying his instructions. Love is also the greatest command given to us. [2 John 1:6, John 14:15, Matthew 22:36-40].

C.) REWARDS OF OBEDIENCE

  • Long-life (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 4:40, Proverbs 3:1-6]
  • Total wellness (Jeremiah 7:23]
  • Favor with God and Man (Proverbs 3:1-4]
  • Success [Joshua 1:8,2 Chronicles 26:5]
  • Peace [Psalm 119:165]
  • Protection [Ecclesiastes 8:5, Proverbs 16:7, Deuteronomy 28:7]
  • Answers to requests [1 John 3:22]

DISCUSSION: What do you do if a parent, guardian, or authority requires you to do something contrary to God’s will?

LIFE APPLICATION: From today, make a conscious effort to follow God’s instruction whether He speaks to you directly or through His Word. Also make a conscious effort to obey your parents, guardian, authority, government rules, and regulations.

CONCLUSION: Overall, obedience is a Christian virtue, a Christian should be known for being obedient and respectful. There’s a popular song “Make me a good child like Samuel, he was obedient” Let us pray that God Almighty through His grace makes us obedient children of His Kingdom.
