LESSON SEVEN (07)
TOPIC: PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
BIBLE TEXT: Acts 1:4-8
[4]And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
[5]For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
[6]When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
[7]And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
[8]But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
MEMORY VERSE: Luke 24:49 “And behold I send the promise of my father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
LESSON AIM: to let the children know that the Holy Spirit is the promise of God the father to believers.
CENTRAL TRUTH: Holy Spirit gives power for service.
INTRODUCTION: Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the father. When the Holy Spirit which is the promise of the father shall come they would be filled with power to witness in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. One thing we must know about the God that we serve is that He keeps to His promises. Since God promised to give believers the gift of Holy Spirit, God kept to His promise on the day of Pentecost.

A. THE PROPHECY OF JOEL CONCERNING THE PROMISE OF HOLY SPIRIT
Recorded in Joel 2:28-32.
- The elements of this prophecy included:
a. The Spirit being poured out on all flesh – Joel 2:28
b. Sons and daughters prophesying, and young men seeing visions and old men dreaming dreams – Joel 2:28
c. God’s Spirit being poured out upon His men-servants and maidservants – Joel 2:29 - This prophecy began to be fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost after the Ascension of Christ
a. When the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles in Jerusalem – Acts 2:1-4
b. Who enabled them to speak in foreign languages- Act 2:4-13
c. Note that Peter ties the events of that day with Joel’s prophecy – Acts 2:15-21B
B. JESUS CHRIST PROMISED BELIEVERS THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- The Spirit would be given to those who ask the Heavenly Father – Luke 11:13
- The Spirit would be given as “living water” to all those who thirst and come to Him in faith, and drink- John 7:37-39
- Holy Spirit will be a Helper, and abide with them – John 14:16-17
- He will bring to their remembrance all things Jesus taught them – John 14:26
- He will bear witness of Christ, together with the apostles – John 15:26-27
LIFE APPLICATION: As a child of God you need the Holy Spirit to be able to effectively minister the gospel and to live the Christian life.
CONCLUSION: The promise of the Holy Spirit became a reality on the day of Pentecost to show the faithfulness of God.
