BIBLE TEXTS: Psalms 51:10-12; 24:3-4; Matthew 5:8

MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

LESSON AIM: At the end of the study, teenagers should understand the benefits of having a pure heart.

CENTRAL TRUTH: Blessed are the pure in heart.

INTRODUCTION: The heart is that spiritual part of us where our emotions and desires dwell. The human heart, in its natural condition, is evil, treacherous and deceitful Jeremiah 17:9. Our minds, emotions and desires have been tainted by sin. Jesus pointed out the fallen condition of our hearts in Mark 7:21- 23: “From within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a person impure. In order for a person to be saved, then, the heart must be changed. This only happens by the power of God in response to faith. “With the heart one believes unto righteousness” – Romans 10:10. God, in His Mercy can create a new heart within us Psalm 51:10, Ezekiel 36:26. The heart is the core of our being, and the Bible sets great importance on keeping our hearts pure: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” – Proverbs 4:23.

CENTRAL TRUTH: A life of dedication is a life of total commitment to God.

INTRODUCTION: Cynthia -a fifteen-year-old girl has a deep dedication to God. She boldly proclaims “Time with Jesus is never wasted”. After she had attended Church for a while, her eyes were truly opened to the Gospel at a teenagers’ campout she attended. She said “I started to appreciate God and how He created me; Jesus’ example changed my life”. Many teenagers in her community on the other hand were caught in between modernization (Cybercrime, pornography, sexual immorality, substance abuse and drug addiction etc) and traditional religion (Cultism, idolatry, Yahoo plus etc).

Despite all these happening among her peers, she remained focused on studying God’s Word, attending church fellowship and her academics. Through these, she learnt that spending time with God through His Word is very important as she began to excel in her academics and became a reference point in the school and her community. She also started leading a fellowship where many teenagers and children encountered Christ and got saved.

Today, however, career decisions can seem overwhelming because of the sheer number of options available. The Bible teaches some important principles that can assist you in becoming a wise decision-maker.

LESSON EIGHTEEN (18)
TOPIC: HOME TRAINING: MANNERS AND SOCIAL ETIQUETTE
BIBLE TEXT: Proverbs 4:1-25.

MEMORY VERSE: Exodus 20:12 – “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee”,

LESSON AIM: To let the teens know the importance of home training.

CENTRAL TRUTH: Home training is vital in the development of every child of God.

INTRODUCTION: In sociology, there is a constant nature versus nurture debate as regards the behaviours and attitude of a person. Neither factor should be considered above the other; however, it is clear that the way a child is nurtured will determine his or her future. A well brought up child will grow up to be a well brought up teenager and a pride to his family. He or she would be said to have good home-training. We can see this manifested in the life of Timothy as a teenager. Timothy’s character so impressed Paul that he chose to take him on many of his missions. In fact, Timothy became his right-hand man, carrying messages to Churches and individuals and ministering where needed. Paul loved Timothy as his own son and wrote two letters of instruction especially for him.

Our study guide shall reflect the attributes of good upbringing manifested in the life of Timothy.

STUDY GUIDE
A. WHAT IS GOOD HOME TRAINING?
It can be simply defined as manners and social etiquette taught at home. These are patterns of behaviour that, if imbibed by a child, would have a positive impact on his or her life, irrespective of where the child (or adult) finds himself or herself.

B. TRAITS OF GOOD HOME TRAINING/UPBRINGING

  1. Discipline – Proverbs 29:17.
  2. Respect for people -1 Timothy 5:1-3.
  3. Being an example to other believers -1 Timothy 4:12.
  4. Good works – Ephesians 2:10.

Mention other traits of good upbringing

C. BENEFITS OF HOME TRAINING

  1. It fosters peace and harmony in the home – Proverbs 29:17.
  2. Obedience to God – Matthew 16:24.
  3. It helps correct bad habits and attitudes earl – Proverbs 22:15.
  4. It provides wisdom and life lessons to help avoid costly mistakes – Proverbs 29:15.

D. WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT HOME TRAINING

  1. Children are precious creations and blessings Psalm 127:3-5.
  2. Children should be taught prayer and study of the word.
    Teens Teacher’s Manual 2024/2025 Edition
  3. Home training is God’s commandment and desire – Deuteronomy 6:6-9, Proverbs 1:8-9.
  4. Home training should refine you but not make you oppressed or depressed – Colossians 3:21.

DISCUSSION: It has been reported that what Africans term “discipline” or “training” is actually emotional abuse. What is your opinion on Godly ways to discipline a child?

INVITATION/APPLICATION: Make sure you take time to appreciate your parents/guardians for training you. It takes a lot of love, energy and wisdom to train a child. However, if you have not been yielding to the training of your parents, you can repent today. Ask the Lord to forgive you and start a new life of obedience to your parents.

CONCLUSION: Eunice and Lois, Timothy’s mother and grandmother took the instructions in Deuteronomy 6:6-8 very seriously and over the years, their efforts bore fruit. Timothy memorized whole passages from the Scriptures, as was the custom for Jewish children, using them to guide his life. Gradually he developed into a “vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work” – 2 Timothy 2:21. In conclusion, do not despise these days of training and the sometimes-tough process. God has a plan for you and everything will work for your good in the end if you yield to Him.
