BIBLE TEXT: Psalm 139:13-14.
[13]For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
[14]I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

LESSON AIM & OBJECTIVES: To gain a deeper
understanding of their worth and identity in Christ, leading to a healthier and more positive self-esteem. Through the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explore the concept of self-esteem.
  2. Understand their identity in Christ.

INTRODUCTION: Genesis 1:27 states that humans are created in the image of God. Each person is uniquely crafted by God with Tof inherent value and purpose. This understanding lays the foundation for a positive self-image. God’s love for us is not based on our performance or achievements but on His inherent goodness and grace. John 3:16 talks about God’s unconditional love for humanity.

OUTLINES
A. UNDERSTANDING SELF-ESTEEM.
B. YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST.

A. UNDERSTANDING SELF ESTEEM
Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. It’s based on our opinions and beliefs about our self. Self-esteem refers to a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth. It is important to know that believing in yourself and accepting yourself for who you are is an important factor in success, relationships, and happiness and that self-esteem plays an important role in living a flourishing life. It provides us with belief in our abilities and the motivation to carry them out, ultimately reaching fulfillment as we navigate life with a positive outlook.

Key elements of self-esteem include:

  1. Self-confidence
    ii. Feelings of security
    iii. Identity
    iv. Sense of belonging
    v. Feeling of competence

People with low self-esteem tend to feel less sure of their abilities and may doubt their decision-making process. They may not feel motivated to try novel things because they don’t believe they can reach their goals. Those with low self-esteem may have issues with relationships and expressing their needs. They may also experience low levels of confidence and feel unlovable and unworthy.

People with overly high self-esteem may overestimate their skills and may feel entitled to succeed, even without the abilities to back up their belief in themselves. They may struggle with relationship issues and block themselves from self. improvement because they are so fixated on seeing themselves as perfect. Rom 12:3.

B. YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST
To be able to understand your identity as a follower of Christ, you need to understand how He sees you. It’s tempting to build your identity on what you accomplish, but this is not a stable foundation. Your true identity is ultimately based on what God has done for you. In the Bible, God tells us often about how He views His people.

Let’s take a look at what He says about you, if you received Him as your Lord and Savior.
i. You are loved. 1 John 3: 1
ii. You are chosen. 1 Peter 2:9, Ephesians 2:10
iii. You are forgiven. 2 Corinthians 5:17
iv. You are redeemed. 2 Corinthians 5:21
v. You are adopted. Ephesians. 2:19

SUMMARY: Having healthy self-esteem can help motivate you to reach your goals, because you are able to navigate life knowing that you are capable of accomplishing what you set your mind to. Additionally, when you have healthy self-esteem. you are able to set appropriate boundaries in relationships and maintain a healthy relationship with yourself and others.

CONCLUSION: You were created with a purpose. God had specific intentions for your life when He brought you into the world. First and foremost, your purpose is to know Him and glorify Him. Then you can engage in other good works that will bring God glory and grow your own faith. You were saved from great sin. Now, as a child of God, you can walk with God and do great through His work in you.

QUESTIONS:

  1. How does God see you as His child?
  2. How can you build a healthy self-esteem?
