AGE 4-5 TEACHER’S MANUAL
SUNDAY 1ST OF JANUARY, 2023
LESSON EIGHTEEN (18)
TOPIC: UNSPEAKABLE JOY

TEXT: Matthew 21:1-17
[1]And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
[2]Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
[3]And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
[4]All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
[5]Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
[6]And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
[7]And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
[8]And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
[9]And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
[10]And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
[11]And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
[12]And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
[13]And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
[14]And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
[15]And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,
[16]And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
[17]And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.

MEMORY VERSE: Psalms 32:11 “Be glad in the Lord and rejoice o righteous and shout for joy, all you upright heart”.

LESSON AIM: God is the giver of joy.

CHILD RELATED TRUTH: The joy of the Lord is your strength.

INTRODUCTION: Joy is a fruit of the spirit.
If any little word of ours can make one life brighter,
If any little song of ours can make one heart the lighter;,
God help us speak that little word, and take our bit of singing
And drop it in some lonely heart to set the echoes ringing.

PROGRESSION OF EVENTS
A. Travelling from Jericho to Jerusalem, Jesus stopped at nearby village where he sent two of his men to borrow a donkey and its colt, Vs. 1-5
B. Jesus rode the robe-draped colt into the city
C. The huge crowd gathered for the Passover, spreading their garments and palm branches on the road to honor Jesus as king. Vs. 6-7
The Passover was a special time each year where the Jews remember how God had protected them and set free from slavery many years before. When God asked each household to sacrifice a lamb and put the blood on their door post so that the angel of death passing through every family of the Egyptian will Passover their house. Jesus Christ is the lamb of God given for you, His blood saves you punishment of sin and protects. As Jesus rode through Jerusalem, the crowd didn’t understand what He had come to do, wanting to make Him king, they spread garments and branches before Him.

D. The crowd praised Jesus as the son of David- The promised King, Vs. 8 jesus deserves all your praises.
E. The next morning Jesus entered the temple where He drove out those who were greedily buying and selling and also healed many that were sick. Vs 10-14. The young children called out their praise to Him out of their joyful hearts. The praise was natural and right, for Jesus is God the son and He is the giver of unspeakable joy. If you belong to Him, He will always express unspeakable joy that will make you always sing His praises.
F. The religious leaders get offended that Jesus was showing such authority in the temple, demanded that He quiet the children. vs 14-16. The wicked cannot experience unspeakable joy but for you that is a child of God unspeakable joy is your birth right and you express this by praising God always. Psalm 71: 8

CLIMAX: Jesus refused to quiet the children, instead He welcomed their praise, God puts unspeakable joy in the heart of all His children even in the youngest child. vs. 16

CONCLUSION: Preparing for His death Jesus lingered near Jerusalem. Vs. 17

CHALLENGE: If you believe in Jesus, your heart should always be filled with unspeakable joy and you show this by always singing His praises and also telling others about Him
