AGE 6-8 TEACHER’S MANUAL
SUNDAY 12TH OF FEBRUARY, 2023
LESSON TWENTY FOUR (24)
TOPIC: GENTLENESS AND SELF-CONTROL

BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 4:1-11
[1]Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
[2]And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
[3]Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
[4]But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
[5]Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
[6]and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
[7]Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
[8]Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
[9]And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
[10]Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
[11]Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry

MEMORY VERSE: GALATIANS 6:1 “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”

LESSON AIM: Children will know gentleness and self-control are modeled most greatly by our God, are made possible through Christ and are a Fruit ofthe Holy Spirit.

CHILD-RELATED TRUTH: God wants you to display the fruit of gentleness and self-control as you abide and trust in Christ.

INTRODUCTION: Children! Have you ever gone without food? A day?
Imagine 40. In our story today, Jesus has gone 40 days and 40 nights without food. Can you imagine what Jesus would have felt like? (Weak, tired, dizzy, confused maybe,)

PROGRESSION OF EVENT: MATTHEW 4:1-11

  1. Jesus was hungry after He had gone without food for 40 days and forty nights in the wilderness, and Satan came to tempt Him
  2. . He challenged Jesus to turn stones into bread, Jesus told Him that man shall not leave by bread alone
  3. Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the temple and asked Him to prove that He was the Son of God by throwing Himself down to become spectacular
  4. Jesus told Satan not to tempt the Lord who is his God.
  5. Jesus had patience and control Himself in answering the questions of satan.
  6. Satan took Jesus to the highest mountain to show Him the kingdom of the world and be powerful if He bows down and worship him
  7. Jesus rebuked Satan and told him that he can only worship the Lord who is his God.

GOSPEL CONNECTION: Satan knew that Jesus is the Son of God and yet wanted to tempt Him. What Satan did not know that Jesus came into the world to set man free from his sins
because of the love God has for the whole world. He performed the ultimate sacrifice by shedding His blood on the cross. Jesus
died and was buried and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), Jesus forgives when you put your trust in Him as your personal Lord and Saviour.

CLIMAX: Jesus defeated Satan by the written word of God with gentleness and self-control.

CONCLUSION: Jesus knew the Word of God! There is no better way to fight temptation. The Word of God will help us all with gentleness and self-control!

CHALLENGE: For those of you who are already saved, think about the following questions: Is there an area of your life that needs gentleness or self-control? Is it your tongue? Do you talk about people? Do you complain? Do you use language that would hurt the heart of God? Or maybe you have a hard time keeping your hands to yourself if you are angry or frustrated about something. Do you hit, push, or kick? What about your free time? Do you spend time with God during the day? Do you help around the house and do your homework?
Or do you lack gentleness and self-control and spend too much time on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games?
The Bible tells us that gentleness and self-control are the Fruits of the Spirit. If you are saved, the Holy Spirit is living inside of
you, and you can be gentle and self-controlled in every area of life.

INVITATION: Knowing Jesus will give you the power to be gentle and have self-control. Call on Him now and be saved (Romans 10:13).
