AGE 6-8 TEACHER’S MANUAL
SUNDAY 16TH OF JULY, 2023
LESSON FORTY SIX(46)
TOPIC: WHO IS YOUR MENTOR?

BIBLE TEXT: 1 KINGS 19:19-21, 2 KINGS 2:1-12
1 Kings 19:19-21
[19]So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
[20]And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
[21]And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

2 Kings 2:1-12
[1]And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
[2]And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.
[3]And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
[4]And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.
[5]And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
[6]And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
[7]And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
[8]And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
[9]And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
[10]And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
[11]And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
[12]And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

MEMORY VERSE: 2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

LESSON AIM: Children will learn to listen to those who teach them, and pay attention to what they show them.

CHILD-RELATED TRUTH: God wants you to learn from those that He placed in your life to serve the Lord.

INTRODUCTION:
Have you ever wondered what God would have you to do in your life? We might think that great Bible characters like Elijah and Elisha were super-human. We may feel they were able to do so much more for the Lord than we could ever do. Not so! They were people just like us. They were once children who loved to play and, sometimes, be silly. God used them for great things because they were willing to be used. God can use our lives for great things when we are willing to be used and follow the instruction of those God has placed over us as teachers

PROGRESSION OF EVENT: 1 KINGS 19:19-21, 2 KING 2:1-12

  1. God told Elijah to cast his mantle on Elisha to replace him as a prophet of God.
  2. Elisha, understanding what was meant when Elijah gave him his mantle, left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and asked his permission to bid his family goodbye.
  3. Elijah and Elisha headed from Gilgal to Bethel to Jericho and Elijah was persistent in telling Elisha to remain behind in each of the cities.
  4. The sons of the prophets in Jericho asked Elisha if he was aware that God was taken his master away and he answered that he knew
  5. Elisha was persistent in following his master and was determined to stay close.
  6. Elisha also wanted to make sure he could carry on the work that God gave his teacher.
  7. Eventually, the two came to the river Jordan and Elijah parted it with his mantle.
  8. Elisha knew that his time with Elijah was almost up and Elijah asked him what he wanted him to do for him before the chariots took him away.

GOSPEL CONNECTION: You too can follow Jesus because he came to earth to save you from your sin. The bible says in John 3:16 that God so loved the world that He had to let His only Son Jesus die for mankind for sins to be forgiven. Jesus died a painful death on the cross, He was buried and came alive again on the third day. If you believe in Him as your Saviour, He will forgive your sins and show you the way to God.

CLIMAX: Elisha asked for a double portion of his master’s anointing, and Elijah told him if he could witness his taking up, the Lord will grant his request

CONCLUSION: Elisha knew that because he had witnessed this incredible occasion, he will inherit what he asked for, and will be used by God to carry on Elijah’s work.

CHALLENGE: Elisha trusted his teacher and also trusted God. He believed God was doing amazing things in Elijah’s life and would do great things for him also. To you who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior, Jesus is the greatest teacher and mentor. If you follow Jesus and His teachings you too can help others to know Him. For you to be able to point others to Jesus, you need to obey Jesus by:

  1. Go to Sunday school or Bible club
  2. Read your bible and pray every day
  3. Obey what you have read and are taught
  4. Witness to others about Jesus

INVITATION: To be able to tell others about Jesus, you need to call upon Him and be saved (Romans 10:13).
