TOPIC: REPENTANCE

BIBLE TEXT: Psalms 51:1-19
[1](To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
[2]Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
[3]For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
[4]Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
[5]Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
[6]Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
[7]Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
[8]Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
[9]Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
[10]Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
[11]Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
[12]Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
[13]Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
[14]Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
[15]O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
[16]For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
[17]The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
[18]Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
[19]Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

MEMORY VERSE: 1 JOHN 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

LESSON AIM: The children will reflect upon the sinfulness of their hearts and repent.

CHILD-RELATED TRUTH: Jesus wants to give you a clean heart

INTRODUCTION:
Hello children! Thanks for being here today! Let me ask this question: Who likes to have second chances?
(Give room for answers). A long time ago, a king asked for a second chance to do things right in the sight of God.
Although David was a good king, there came a time when he did not choose to follow the Lord. When he looked across from the roof of his palace, he saw a beautiful woman, Bathsheba, bathing. This led David to commit adultery with Bathsheba. When Bathsheba became pregnant, David arranged to have her husband murdered so that he could marry her. The prophet, Nathan, confronted David with his sin. David’s heart was such that he repented of his sin and asked the Lord to forgive him.

PROGRESSION OF EVENT: PSALM 51

  1. King David listened to Prophet Nathan and owed up to his sins
  2. King David was very miserable and sorrowful.
  3. He prayed to God and asked Him to forgive him his sins.
  4. King David not only wanted God to forgive him but also to change his life completely.
  5. When God forgave David, he described it as having his heart washed clean.

GOSPEL CONNECTION: What is sin? (Allow children to answer) Sin is anything we say, think, or do, that is not pleasing to God. To be repentant means to be going in one direction, recognize that you are going in the wrong direction, and then turn and go in the right direction. because you have been forgiven by God. God’s love is so great that He sent His perfect sinless Son to take the punishment for your sins. 1 John 1:9 says that if you confess your sins Jesus will forgive your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness just like He did for King David.

CLIMAX: David was so happy to have his heart washed clean of his sin that he burst into praise to God.

CONCLUSION: David praised God because he had peace and joy again

CHALLENGE: If you have repented and trusted in Christ for a clean heart is your heart thankful? Does your heart overflow with praise to God? What does God see when He looks at your heart? Does He see a heart full of sin or a heart that has been washed clean? Psalm 51 teaches us three things:

  1. To think about our sinful hearts,
2.To see how we need Jesus to wash our hearts clean
  2. And, if our hearts have been washed clean, to have a thankful heart full of praise
A person with a clean heart cannot help but praise the Lord for their salvation.

INVITATION: For you to be able to confess your sins and praise God for salvation you need to believe in Jesus and be saved (John 3:16).
