AGE 4-5 TEACHER’S MANUAL
SUNDAY 28TH OF JULY, 2024
LESSON FORTY EIGHT(48)
TOPIC: CONSEQUENCES OF AN UNGRATEFUL HEART 3: DESTRUCTION (LOSS OF BLESSINGS, PHYSICAL WELL BEING)

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Samuel 2:12 – 4:11

MEMORY VERSE: Samuel 2:30b “For those who honour me I will honour and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed”.

LESSON AIM: God is displeased with those with ungrateful heart

CHILD RELATED TRUTH: Make sure you always give God gratitude with pure and sincere heart.

INTRODUCTION: God is displeased with anyone who dishonours Him or His servant. There are many examples of consequences of ungrateful hearts in the Bible; we have the story of Miriam becoming a leper for dishonouring Moses (Numbers 12:1-27), Gehazi (2 King 5:27). Today you will see how a Prophet lost his position, his children and his blessings because his children dishonor God, they were ungrateful to God.

PROGRESSION OF EVENTS
A. The sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas were corrupt. They did not know the Lord and therefore the sin of the young men was great before the Lord for men abhorred the offering of the Lord I Samuel 2:12, 17 (These two men dishonoured God, their lives did not give God gratitude. In what ways did you dishonor God too? Do you steal, fight, and disobey your parents, teacher or the word of God? There are consequences for ungrateful heart Romans 2:23, but God did not want you to be punished for your sin because He loves you John 3:16. He gave you His Son to die so your sin can be forgiven, Jesus died and rose again Hebrew 9:13. If you will call on Him, you will be save from your sin Romans 10:13).
B. Now Eli was very old and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel and how they lay with the women who assembled at the door of the tabernaélé of meeting Vs. 22
C. Eli spoke with his sons about their wickedness, but they did not listen Vs.22-25.
D. A Prophet announced God’s judgement on Eli for not disciplining his sons vs. 27-36 (It was a terrible judgment of loss of blessings, rejection and death because Eli sons dishonoured God with ungrateful heart. It is dangerous when you dishonor God. Discuss with the children how they can dishonor God. Saying wrong things about God, His word or His servant. Disrespect to God, His servant and His offering or instruments Using offering given to you for other things. Fighting or noise making when others are praying. Distracting other instead of listening and paying attention to God’s word etc. A child of God must all honour God and reference Him with grateful heart).
E. God told young Samuel He would judge Eli for his sons’ wickedness and Samuel finally told Eli about God’s message, and he said “It’s the Lord, let Him do what seems good to Him”. Genesis 3:11-18 (Don’t you think their father, Eli response to the prophecy is also awkward and nonchalant to his son grievous sin? He did not plead to God on their behalf. Parents should always be open to God and ask God for mercy concerning their children’s misbehaviour).
F. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines and encamped beside Ebenezer, and the Philistine encamped in Aphek. So the Philistines fought and Israel has defeated and every man fled to their tent and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldier. Genesis 4:1,10.

CLIMAX: Also the Ark of God was captured and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas died Vs.4, 11.

CONCLUSION: then a man that escaped from the battled field told Eli that his sons Hophni and Phinehas are dead and the Ark of God has been captured. He fell off the seat backward and his neck was broken and he died for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel for forty years. Vs12-18. (What a great destruction, loss of blessing, physical wellbeing due to ungrateful heart, Eli lost his two sons, priesthood and his life. May you not be ungrateful to God. Amen).

CHALLENGE: As a child of God always thank God with a grateful heart, ingratitude is dangerous. Everyday thank God for His daily blessings and goodness for life, protection, food, safety, health, shelter, clothing everything. There is so much to thank God for.

INVITATION: The greatest gratitude is for the salvation of your soul. Receive Jesus today John 1:12.
