LESSON FIFTEEN (15)
TOPIC: TYPES OF GRATITUDE TOWARDS GOD 2 (VAIN WORSHIP)

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Samuel 13:4-15
[4]And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
[5]And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.
[6]When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
[7]And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
[8]And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
[9]And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
[10]And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
[11]And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
[12]Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
[13]And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
[14]But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
[15]And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

INTRODUCTION
Children! After the children of Israel successfully got to the promised land, they were ruled by Judges. Seeing other nations being ruled by Kings they too decided that they wanted a King to rule over them forgetting that the only King was God. God gave them Saul as their King even though He knew that a king would be bad for them. For many years Saul was king and nothing happened but one day King Saul’s army did something.

PROGRESSION OF EVENT

  1. The Philistines had gathered to fight the Israelites after Jonathan King Saul’s son attacked an outpost of the Philistines.
  2. The Philistines were very angry and decided to attack the Israelites and their sight made them to run and hide.
  3. Samuel the Priest told King Saul to wait seven days in Gilgal.
  4. Samuel was going to meet Saul and make an offering to the Lord.
  5. The seventh was not yet over when King Saul’s men began to scatter in fear.
  6. Saul decided to make the offering himself since Samuel had not arrived.
  7. King Saul made a burnt offering even though he was supposed to wait for Samuel the priest to do it.
  8. When Samuel finally got there, he told King Saul that he made a big mistake by not waiting.

GOSPEL CONNECTION: By offering a sacrifice Saul was actually disobeying God which is a sin. It is not hard to see that was not a perfect person because his heart was sinful. You and I are not different from King Saul because of our sinful hearts but because of God’s love for us, He sent His only begotten Son Jesus to come to earth to take the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross, He was buried and came alive on the third day so that you can have your sins forgiven.

CLIMAX: Now God will take the kingdom from Saul and give it to someone else.

CONCLUSION: Saul lost the Kingdom by offering a sacrifice that was not his duty to do.

CHALLENGE: For a child who already knows Jesus as Lord and Saviour, you might have done the same thing as King Saul. Sometimes you get fearful about your situation and think that God has forgotten you and you do what you feel is right even if it is in disobedience to God’s word. Remember that Jesus as your Saviour will give you the spirit of obedience.

CARRY-OVER ACTIVITY: Display the spirit of obedience in you by obeying all rules in the house, school, and church, or wherever you find yourself.

INVITATION: You can only display the spirit of obedience if you receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
