LESSON FIFTEEN (15)
TOPIC: TYPES OF GRATITUDE TOWARDS GOD 2 (VAIN WORSHIP)

BIBLE TEXTS: 2 Samuel 24:18, Matthew 15:7-9
2 Samuel 24:18
[18]And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Matthew 15:7-9
[7]Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
[8]This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
[9]But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 15:9 “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

LESSON AIM: To let the children know that not every worship is acceptable to God.

CENTRAL TRUTH: God does not want you to offer vain worship to Him.

INTRODUCTION: The word, “vain” means “useless” or “empty.” It means “hollow” or “unsuccessful.” When Jesus used Isaiah’s words to criticize the. people of His day, He wasn’t criticizing the way they were praying or singing. He was criticizing their hearts and the way they were living. Vain worship is a kind of worship and service that people render to God out of the flesh and not according to the dictate of the Spirit of God.

STUDY GUIDE
A. HOW BIBLE DESCRIBE VAIN WORSHIP

  1. They honour me with lip service. Matt 15:8
  2. They remove their hearts far from me. John 4:24.
  3. They reverence human traditions 1 Corinthians 1:18-31.
  4. Vain worship is worshiping God from an impure heart. Luke 6:45
  5. Worshiping God with a divided attention. Revelation 3:15-16
    6 Worshiping with a heart that is not totally devoted to God. Mathew 6:24
    7 Worshiping God without being born again. John 3:1-7
  6. Worshiping God in the flesh. Romans 8:5-8
  7. Worshiping idols (Psalms 81:9).
  8. Worshiping with an insincere heart (Isaiah 29:13).
  9. When your worship is not according to the word of God (Romans 10:1-4).
  10. Worshiping what you don’t know (Acts 17:23, John 4:22).

B. GOD WILL NOT ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING ATTITUDE IN THE PLACE OF WORSHIP:

  1. Do worship your own way (Will-Worship). Gen. 4:7, Colossians 2:23.
  2. Worship a non-god. Exodus 34:14.
  3. Changing the truth of God into a lie. Rom 1:25
  4. Calling on God vainly. Anyone who does this is not a child of God. Exodus 20:7, Leviticus 19:12, and Matthew 12:30-32
  5. Not having a repentance heart of humility towards God. John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13.
  6. Hating people. 1 John 3:15.
  7. Disrespectful Attitude. Malachi 1:6.

C. THOSE WHOSE WORSHIP WERE UNACCEPTABLE IN THE BIBLE
We are referring here to the worship of the true God, but worship which was offered in ways that were unacceptable.

  1. Cain’s Worship: Unacceptable. Genesis 4:3-5.
  2. Nadab And Abihu’s Worship: Unacceptable. Leviticus 10:1-2.
  3. Uzziah’s Worship: Unacceptable. 2 Chronicles 26:16.
  4. King Saul-1 Samuel 13:4-15.
  5. The lsraelites -Exodus 32:2-6.

CONCLUSION: Worship is an activity on the part of man to praise God and to reverence Him and His Word. Almost from the beginning of man’s presence on this earth, man has tried to ignore God’s Word, do his “own thing” and call it worship expecting God to be pleased. Note that God does not accept just any service.

LIFE APPLICATION: Give God a qualitative worship.

INVITATION: Come to Jesus today, so you can offer acceptable worship to God.
