LESSON SEVENTEEN (17)
TOPIC: CAREER CHOICE

BIBLE TEXTS: Jeremiah 29:11-14.
[11]For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
[12]Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
[13]And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
[14]And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

MEMORY VERSE: Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established”.

LESSON AIM: At the end of the study, teenagers should be able to trust God in choosing their career.

CENTRAL TRUTH: You can depend on God to guide your Career choice.

INTRODUCTION: Your career is a point of expressing God’s glory; hence you must be intentional to not make the mistake of choosing a career simply because other people are walking that line or most people are choosing that way. Today, however, career decisions can seem overwhelming because of the sheer number of options available. The Bible teaches some important principles that can assist you in becoming a wise decision-maker.

STUDY GUIDE
A. WHAT IS A CAREER?
Career simply means one’s calling in life, or a person’s profession or occupation. A Career in itself is powered by a passion: There are four types of career paths:

  1. knowledge-based
  2. skill-based
  3. entrepreneur-based
  4. freelance.

Every kind of career path caters to a specific set of qualifications that help you perform your job.

B. HOW TO MAKE A CAREER CHOICE

  1. Seek the face of God in prayer – Proverbs 3:5, Jeremiah 29:13.
  2. Know yourself, identify your talents, gifts and skills 1 Peter 4:10.
  3. Seek guidance and counselling Proverbs 11:14, 24:6, 20:18.
  4. Seek knowledge and make research – Proverbs 18:15.
  5. Create resolutions, make plans and goals – Luke 14:28.
  6. Assess your interests, skills, values, and personality.
  7. Take action and try options.
  8. Talk to people in those fields of study you are choosing.

C. HOW TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR CAREER

  1. Hard work – Ecclesiastes 9:10.
  2. Consistency and commitment-Galatians 6:9.
  3. Intentionality Proverbs 21:5. Ephesians 5:15-16, Luke 14:28,
  4. Resilience-Psalm 37:23-24, Philippians 4:13.
  5. Perseverance-Proverbs 3:5-7, 4:25-26, Matthew 24:13.
  6. Wisdom James 1:5.
  7. God’s help and favour – Psalm 121:1-2, 46:1-5, Isaiah 40:31.

LIFE APPLICATION: Passion and intelligence are needed in your choice of career. Seeking and knowing God’s will be paramount to guide your decision and this can only be possible if you have a relationship with God.

CONCLUSION: Trusting God in your Career choice is a major step in the right direction in life. Knowing His will for your career gives you hope and confidence in life, provided you add other principles like hard work, commitment etc.
