BIBLE TEXT: Habakkuk 2:2-3
[2]And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
[3]For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

MEMORY VERSE: Habakkuk 2:2, And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

LESSON AIM: To let the children know how to set goals for the future.

CENTRAL TRUTH: Goal setting is the only pathway to success.

INTRODUCTION: So many people wrongly think, “Goal setting is not spiritual because it shows a lack of trust. It’s not right to plan. Instead, people should wait for God to lead them. God doesn’t want us to forge ahead in pride without consulting Him for direction. But neither does He want us to sit around without acting, because He’s given us gifts and talents and has also said that we are called to do good works (Eph. 2: 8-10, Romans 12:4-8, Matthew 25:14-30). Forging ahead without seeking God or sitting back and doing nothing can stem from fear or a lack of faith. However, setting goals and consulting with Him shows that you trust Him and believe that He is able to lead you while you are moving forward. God considers it helpful for us to have goals in every area of our lives and for us to work toward those goals.

STUDY GUIDE
A. SETTING GOAL THAT IS REACHABLE
Sitting down and actually thinking about what God wants us to do with our lives is often the hardest part. The Bible isn’t silent about goal-setting either. The book of Proverbs speaks frequently about setting goals. “If your goals are good, you’ll be respected Proverbs 11:27. “We should make plans, counting on God to direct us” Proverbs 16:9. “Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts” Proverbs 24:3-4 Look at the story of Abraham and his servant in Genesis 24. The passage teaches us how to set and reach goals.
As Abraham’s servant, Eliezer, set out to find a wife for Isaac, he followed specific steps. These steps work today just as much as they did in Abraham’s time.

  1. Determine your position. Genesis 24:1
  2. Define your purpose. Gen.24:4
  3. Discover a promise. Never confuse the decision-making phase with the problem- solving phase. Make the decision, and then solve the problem. Gen. 24:7.
  4. Describe the profit. Every goal must have a payoff or reward. If there’s no reward, you won’t be motivated to fulfill it. Abraham clearly described the payoff to Eliezer in verse 7: “You will get my son a wile from there”
  5. Desire for prayer. Gen. 24:12.15.

B. SPECIFIC STEPS TO SET GODLY GOALS Goals are as unique as we are. They should reflect our unique personality and passions. And we arrive at them through different avenues. But the following steps to goal setting can guide us as we circle our life goals

  1. Begin with prayer: Prayer is the best way to jump-start the process of goal setting. If you set goals in the context of prayer, there is a much higher likelihood that your goals will glorify God, and if they don’t glorify God, then they aren’t worth setting in the first place.
  2. Check Your Motives: Your motives will be the catalyst to drive your goals to actualization.
  3. Looking at the goals of others
  4. Be specific
  5. Write it down
  6. Include others
  7. Dream Big

C. HOW TO SET SMART GOALS
The most effective way to accomplish a goal is to be S.M.A.R.T. about it let’s see what the Word of God says about it. Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established. Proverbs 16:3. Now let’s start planning. Remember, a S.M.A.R.T. goal is one that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

  1. Specific (simple, sensible, significant) Be simple, clear and specific in what it is you want to accomplish.
  2. Measurable (meaningful, motivating) How will you measure the progress of your goals? Set some short and long-term goals. This helps to identify tangible progress and allows you the space to adjust along the way
  3. Achievable (agreed, attainable): Do you have the skills and tools necessary to achieve this goal? Or will you need to acquire them before starting?
  4. Relevant (reasonable, realistic, resourced, results-based) The goal should be relevant to you and those that are involved. And it should be able to move things forward in a positive way.
  5. Time-bound: Timelines will help you to stay on task. And deadlines will help to create a sense of urgency. A little tension produces a reachable outcome. But be realistic when setting the goal.

CONCLUSION: In order to fulfill destiny, set meaningful and achievable goals. Avoid navigating aimlessly in the corridor of life.

LIFE APPLICATION: As you can see from this example, breaking big goals down into smaller and more manageable goals makes it far easier to see how the goal will get accomplished.

INVITATION: God is the smartest goal setter, He wants you to surrender all to Him today
