TOPIC: Baptism Of The Holy Spirit (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 2 January 2022)

MEMORY VERSE: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” – Acts 2:38

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 11:9-13 (KJV) (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 2 January 2022)

9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

INTRODUCTION: The baptism of the Holy Ghost is the experience of the Holy Spirit coming into a person’s life. The word that is translated baptism means “to be immersed; to be totally covered” and can be understood by looking at the physical demonstration of water baptism. When we come to be baptised in water after we have been saved, we go down into the water and the water completely covers us. we are immersed, totally under the water. When we receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost, we are totally immersed and covered and filled with the Holy Ghost. Jesus also used the word baptism in connection with the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. He explained to His disciples that just as John was baptised with water, they would be baptised with the Holy Ghost. The word, baptised, gave His followers an idea of what they were to expect – that they would be immersed in the Spirit.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. HOW TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
  2. THE BAPTISER, THE ACTUAL BAPTISM AND THE EVIDENCE

1. HOW TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The following steps will guide any sincere candidate for the baptism of the Holy Ghost:

  1. Be born again (Jn.3:3; Acts 3:19).
  2. Be desirous and thirsty for the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Ps.37:4; Ps.42:1; Isa.55:1).
  3. Believe that the promise of the baptism of the Holy Ghost is for you and all believers. Acts 2:33).
  4. Identify the Lord Jesus Christ as the right source of the baptism in the Holy Ghost (Matt. 3:11).
  5. Have confidence also in His word, which will never fall to the ground but is forever settled in Heaven (Jn.7:37-39; Ps.119:89)
  6. Then ask Him and He will answer (Lk.11:10).
  7. Praise and thank God in advance for your baptism because He is the giver of good gifts. (James 1:17; 1 Thess.5:18).

2. THE BAPTISER, THE ACTUAL BAPTISM AND THE EVIDENCE

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Baptiser (Matt.3:11). The process of baptism in the Holy Ghost involves finding time to come before the presence of God, our Maker, in worship, praise, thanksgiving and with a right mind (Ps.100:4; Ps.66:18). The focus of attention at this time should be Jesus, who is the Author and the Finisher of our faith and the Rewarder of the faithful and the diligent (Heb.12:1-2; Heb.11:6). After asking prayerfully and in faith, the Holy Spirit Himself gives utterance which is evidenced in the speaking of tongues (Acts 2:1-4; Acts 10:44-46). This baptism initiates the believer into POWER, the divine ability to do exploits, “greater works than these” as Jesus prophesied (Lk.24:49; Jn.14:12).

CONCLUSION:
The baptism in the Holy Ghost is for you to make you strong, ride high in God and be perfect as God intends you to be. If you are born again then ask for the baptism in the Holy Ghost and the Baptiser will do it now, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

QUESTIONS:

  1. List the steps to the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
  2. What is the initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Ghost?

FURTHER READINGS:

Monday: Jude 25 (KJV)
25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Tuesday: Numbers 24:2 (KJV)
2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

Wednesday: Jude 3-10 (KJV)
3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. 10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.

Thursday: Judges 14:6 (KJV)
6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

Friday: 1 Samuel 10:10 (KJV)
10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

Saturday: 1 Samuel 16:13-14 (KJV)
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

Sunday: Acts 19:2-7 (KJV)
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve.

ASSIGNMENT:
Students should identify five (5) things that can hinder one from being baptised in the Holy Spirit.
