BIBLE PASSAGE: Psalms 33:1-8 KJV (RCCG Sunday School STUDENT Manual 23 May 2021)
1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.
2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
INTRODUCTION: Our study today focuses on the use of psalms, hymns and other spiritual songs. The psalmist admonishes us to sing psalms unto the Lord. Also, Apostle Paul admonished Christians to edify one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. One very good habit believers should cultivate is the act of singing hymns and spiritual songs. It is one of the ways by which we can load our lives with the word of God.
LESSON OUTLINES:
- PSALMS
- HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS
1. PSALMS
Psalms literally means “song sung to a harp” (Psalm 98:5). This implies that psalms are ways of singing to God. Psalms are also what one sings to talk about God’s wondrous ways (Psalm 105:2; 33:2-5, 1 Chronicles 16:9) and to reflect the mercies of God on one’s life (Psalm 89:1). One of the ways we can utilize our moment is by singing psalms (James 5:13). Psalms are ways at which we can enter into the presence of God (Psalm 95:2). There are psalms of thanksgiving (Psalm 30), psalms of praise (Psalm 117;145:1), prophetic (Psalm 2:1-12;16:1-11), penitential (Psalm 6:1-10; 25:1-22), intercessional (Psalm 20:1-9; 67:1-7), psalms of affliction (Psalm 3:1-8; 4:1-8), educational (Psalm 1:1-6; 5:1-12), historical (Psalm 78:1-72; 105:1-45), etc.
2. HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS
Hymns are spiritual canticles, songs or psalms. In Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16, Paul require Christians to edify one another with “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” Matthew 26:30 says that Christ and His disciples, having supped, sang a hymn and went out.
Hymns and spiritual songs are songs inspired by God and written by spiritual people or on spiritual subjects (Psalm 42:8). One very good habit believers should cultivate is the act of singing hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19). Today, we have all kinds of songs including those that feed our pride and glorify the flesh and even the devil. Not using appropriate hymns and songs has seriously affected our worship. One of the fastest ways we can load our lives with the word of God is by singing hymns (Colossians 3:16). However, we must be born again before we can live a life full of hymns and spiritual songs. A life that is void of God will struggle with the messages in these hymns.
CONCLUSION: One of the ways one can maximise gains from psalms, hymns and songs is for one to be born again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Hymns come from divine inspiration. Therefore, one must be in the spirit to get the best from them.

RCCG Sunday School HYMN
- O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Thy friendship suits me well,
Both young and old will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?
