BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 8:27-35 KJV (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 5 July 2020)

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

INTRODUCTION:

Having understood the “Sychar Ministry” as personal evangelism, involving the believer and a person in need of salvation, it is important to know who the subject is, how to approach him/her and the caution to exercise. Luke 19:1-5, John 3:1-5. Surely, there are rewards for soul winners

TEXT REVIEW: Acts 8:27-35

Some people imagined that the poor are the best candidates for Heaven and therefore excluded the rich from making Heaven in their wildest imagination. This erroneous imagination must be corrected at once because “poverty” is not one of the requirements to make Heaven. That means, the rich people must be approached in haste, with the message of salvation, in the comfort of their houses, cars, offices, etc as Philip did ……”And Philip ran thither to him” Acts 8:30.

LESSON OUTLINES:

OUTLINE 1: APPROACH THE SUBJECT

STEP 1: Teacher should state the types of subjects which one may likely meet during evangelism as stated below:
i. The Careless: These are people commonly found in the society having business life, homes and their pleasures as their limited fields of operation. (Luke 12:19). God is never in their thoughts or agenda. Psalms 10:4
ii. The Deceived: These are victims of false doctrines/prophets. 1 Tim. 4:1; Jer. 14:14; Matt. 24:11&24
iii. The Objectors: These categories of people question the authority of the Bible and announce that it is full of contradictions. They usually oppose the truth. Acts 13:8; 18:6; 2 Tim. 3:8
iv. The Skeptics and Atheists: The skeptics are in doubt of the existence of God and the authenticity of the Bible, while the atheists, foolishly and flatly deny the existence of God. Job 21:15; Psalms 14:1
v. The Excusers: These highlight circumstances surrounding their failure to do what they know they ought to have done. Gen. 3:10-13; Luke 14:18-20
vi. The Heathen: These are completely ignorant of the living God l, His word, the Lord Jesus Christ or His Gospel. Acts 17:23
vii. The Anxious: These are people who have a conviction of their sins and the need for help, but do not know how to go about it. Acts 2:37, 8:30-31, 16:30
viii. The Backsliders: These were once joyous Christians who are now miserable because they have lost the joy and possibly the assurance of their salvation. Psalms 137:1-4; Prov. 14:14a; Heb 6:4-6
ix. The Discouraged Christians: These are Christians who have lost their confidence in the Lord, due to the adversities of life- failure in business, ill health, bereavement in the family or any other trial. Prov. 24:10

STEP 2: Teacher should state the following truth about personal evangelism.
i. No two individuals are exactly the same
ii. Personal evangelism demands different approaches based on personality and situation at hand.
iii. Therefore, those engaged in personal evangelism must absolutely depend on the Holy Spirit for guidance

STEP 3: Teacher should identify the following approaches as applicable:
i. Those who are zealous may be reached through their zeal. Acts 9:4-6
ii. The intellectually inclined personality could be reached through intellectual activities. Acts 8:27-30; John 3:1-3, 10
iii. Those inclined to curiosity and inquisitiveness. Luke 19:1-5
iv. An approach to the listeners conscience is a sure way in leading a sinner to Christ. E.g. the jailor. Acts 16:27-31

OUTLINE 2: CAUTIOUS AND REWARDS

A. CAUTION TO THE SOUL WINNERS:
Soul winners should avoid the following pit falls on personal evangelism.

ii. Avoid dealing with more that one person at a time. John 3:1-4
iii. Avoid being unnecessarily flamboyant in appearance. Be moderate. Phil. 4:5
iv. Avoid dominating the conversation. Allow for a feedback or contribution. John 4:7:26
v. Be cautious with the opposite sex. 1 Cor. 10:12
vi. Do not result into argument. 2 Tim. 2:23
vii. Don not impose your experience of salvation. Acts 15:1
viii. Avoid unnecessary familiarity

B. REWARDS FOR SOUL WINNERS
i. Overflowing joy for the soul winner. Luke 10:17-20
ii. Shining as a star. Daniel 12:3
iii. Crown of rejoicing. 1 Thess. 2:19.

CLASS ACTIVITY: Why should soul winners exercise caution?
