Thy friend friendship suits me well,
Both young and will sing Thy song,
    We long for Sunday School.
  3. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
    Christ was Thy first teacher,
    The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
    Does manifest in thee.
  4. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
    This testimony is sure,
    That God, the Father Almighty,
    Poured His blessing on Thee
  5. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
    I’ll be in Sunday School.
  6. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day
    I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
    Without my being blest?

OPENING PRAYER
Father, please send to me riches and honour from Your treasuries. Let Your hand make me great and give me strength.

MEMORY VERSE: “Both riches and honour come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great, and to give strength to all”. – 1Chronicles 29:12(NKJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: LUKE 12:15-21

15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

INTRODUCTION
As stated in the previous lesson, ‘Wealth’ is the abundance of valuable possessions or money. When we have wealth, we have more than we need to sustain a normal life. The Bible contains several examples of people blessed by God with great wealth; Abraham (Gen. 13:2), Jacob (Gen. 30:43), Solomon (1Kings 10:23), Joanna (Luke 8:3) and Joseph of Arimathea (Matt. 27:57) among others. We shall consider what the Bible says about wealth and what should be believers’ disposition towards it.

TEACHING REVIEW: LUKE 12:15-21

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES
  2. BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

A. Christians view of wealth should be derived from the Scriptures. This is because:

i. Wealth and honour comes from God (1Chronicles 29:12).

ii. God often blesses his children with wealth when they place Him (Deuteronomy 28:1-5)

iii. The Bible establishes the fact that wealth and riches shall be in the house of the man that fears God (Psalm 112:1-3).

iv. Money answers all things (Ecclesiastes 10:19).

v. To enjoy one’s wealth it is a gift from God (Ecclesiastes 5:19).

vi. Money is a defence (Ecclesiastes 7:12) and it makes many friends (Proverbs 19:4).

B. However, the Bible also contains several warnings about wealth, among which is the fact that:

i. The love of money is the root of evil (1Timothy 6:10).

ii. Riches should not be trusted (Proverbs 23:5; Luke 12:15).

iii. Wealth gotten through the wrong means shall diminish (Proverbs 13:11)

iv. All men will die and leave their wealth to others (Psalm 49:10).

v. Those who pursue wealth at the expense of other core values of life will never be satisfied (Ecclesiastes 5:10a)

CLASS ACTIVITY 1
How should believers see or handle wealth?

BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION

A. Christian should note that:

i. Wealth has never been an accurate barometer of a person standing with God.

ii. Some righteous people are poor (Luke 16:20-23) while some wicked people are rich (Psalm 73:3,12).

B. How then should believers handle wealth?

i. It is not a sin for wealthy believers to enjoy their riches (Ecclesiastes 5:19; 3John 2).

ii. Believers should see wealth as an investment entrusted to them by God (1Chronicles 29:12).

iii. This wealth must be used to enhance good and pursued God’s purposes.

iv. Wealthy believers can initiate:

a. Charities and scholarship programmes.

b. Promotes care for orphans, widows, and the less-privileged (1 John 3:17-18; James 1:27).

c. Be instrumental in advancing God’s Kingdom (Luke 8:3; Romans 16:3).

v. It is very important that believers prove themselves as faithful stewards by channeling their wealth to godly legacies (1Chronicles 4:2; Matthew 6:19-20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2
What are the wrong ways in handling wealth?

CONCLUSION
In a bid to be wealthy, believers should always note their first care should be for God’s kingdom and his rightousness (Matt. 6:33).
