TOPIC: SANCTIFICATION

BIBLE TEXT: Leviticus 20:7-8
[7]Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.
[8]And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you.

MEMORY VERSE: 2 Timothy 2.21 – “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work”. (KJV)

LESSON AIM: To help teenagers understand the concept of sanctification and how it applies to their lives as followers of Jesus.

CENTRAL TRUTH: Sanctification is becoming like Christ daily.

INTRODUCTION: Sanctification literally means “to set apart for special use or purpose”, that is, to make holy or sacred. Therefore, sanctification refers to the state or process of being set apart i.e. “made holy”, as a vessel, full of the Holy Spirit of God. Sanctification comes after Salvation. It is an instantaneous and definite work of grace, which is accomplished in the believer through the shed Blood of Jesus Christ. It is the progressive work of God to make a believer more like Jesus Christ.

STUDY GUIDE
A WHAT IS SANCTIFICATION?

  1. Sanctification is God’s gracious work (Leviticus 20.8). This means that sanctification is God’s free gift. Ephesians 2:8. Sanctification is work that the Holy Spirit initiates and sustains-Galatians 3:1-3,5:16-18.
  2. Sanctification is supernatural: Sanctification results from the supernatural presence and power of the Holy Spirit working in a Christian’s life – Galatians 5:22-26, Ephesians 3:20, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10.
  3. Sanctification is a process 1 Peter 2:2. The Christian life is progressive – Philippians 3:12-14. To be sanctified means embracing weaknesses and trusting in God’s undeserved kindness 2 Corinthians 12:7-10.

B. PROCESS OF SANCTIFICATION

  1. Sanctification is the work of God – Leviticus 20:8, Philippians 2:13.
  2. Repentance from sin – Acts 3:19, 2 Timothy 2:22 and 1 Thessalonians 5:23
  3. Total obedience Leviticus 20:7, Philippians 2:12
  4. Regular studying of God’s word John 17:17
  5. Fellowship with other believers – Hebrews 10:24

C. BENEFITS OF SANCTIFICATION

  1. It makes you prepared unto every good work – 2 Timothy 2:22.
  2. It makes you more like Jesus – 2 Corinthians 3:18.
  3. It births new and godly character in you through the help of the Holy Spirit – Galatians 5:22.
  4. It helps your spiritual growth through the Word of God 1 Peter 2:2, 2 Corinthians. 7:1.
  5. Sanctification improves our intellect and knowledge – Colossians 3:10.

DISCUSSION: What is your role in Sanctification?

LIFE APPLICATION: The porosite od our lives is us to be sanctified – to become more like the image of His perfect Son, Jesus Christ. This is not done through our determination, resolve, willpower, or strength, but by the Holy Spirit as we yield our lives to His control and are filled with Him – Galatians 3:3. Our lives will only bring honour and glory to God as purposed when we are sanctified.

CONCLUSION: The Bible tells us that sanctification is God’s will for our lives and souls 1 Thessalonians 4:3, as it is the process of becoming more like Christ, by purifying our hearts and minds through repentance, prayer, and other spiritual activities.
