LESSON FIVE (05)
TOPIC: THE SANCTIFIER: HOLY SPIRIT
BIBLE TEXTS: John 14:16-17
[16]And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
[17]Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
1 Peter 1:1-2
[1]Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
[2]Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
MEMORY VERSE: 2 Thessalonians 2:13 – “But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth”.
LESSON AIM: To enable teenagers have the understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit in our Sanctification.
CENTRAL TRUTH: The Holy Spirit sanctifies us by working in and through us.
INTRODUCTION: Sanctification refers to a crucial work of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives. According to the Scriptures, our participation in this can be described mainly as obedience. Sanctification is the moment-by-moment process by which we more and more submit our hearts, minds, and bodies to following Jesus.
STUDY GUIDE
A. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? (John 14:16-17)
- He’s the third Person in the Trinity,
- He’s sent to us by God the Father,
- He’s the Spirit of Truth,
- He’s the Comforter,
- He’s not known to unbelievers,
- He’s known only to believers,
- He dwells in believers,
B. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN SANCTIFICATION?
The Holy Spirit:
- Makes us obedient-Romans 15:16.
- Enables us to put to death the deeds of the flesh – Romans 8:13.
- Reproves (convicts) us of our sins John 16:8, 4. Leads us where we need to go Luke 4:1, Galatians 5:16-18. 4.
- Fills us with power – Micah 3:8
- Convicts us of our sins – John 16:8
LIFE APPLICATION: Thank God that the Holy Spirit sanctifies us by working in and through us! The Holy Spirit has not only set us free from sin but also lives in our hearts and reminds us to follow Jesus more closely. As we daily follow Jesus, we become holy, set apart for serving God.
CONCLUSION: Since we have learnt about the Holy Spirit as the sanctifier, we need to open our hearts to Him. As we get to know the Holy Spirit more, we should explore His other characteristics and learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
