DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE
CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: MONDAY, JULY 01, 2024
TOPIC: FOR WE ARE BRETHREN
10:1. Now this [is] the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.
10:2. The sons of Japheth [were] Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
10:3. The sons of Gomer [were] Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
10:4. The sons of Javan [were] Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
10:5. From these the coastland [peoples] of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
10:6. The sons of Ham [were] Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
10:7. The sons of Cush [were] Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; and the sons of Raamah [were] Sheba and Dedan.
10:8. Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth.
10:9. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.”
10:10. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
10:11. From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,
10:12. and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that [is] the principal city).
10:13. Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,
10:14. Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim).
THE MESSAGE:
The Bible clearly indicates that all mankind is descended from Adam, through Noah (verse 32). We are thus physically in his lineage (1 Corinthians 15: 49). In this sense, all mankind are really brethren, as Abraham told Lot (Genesis 13: . In our text, specific nations that descended from Japhet and Ham are identified. Many of them are in the present day Asia, Europe, Africa. Specific examples include Egypt (Mizraim in verses 6 & 13), Babel or Babylon (verse 10) and Assyria (verse 11). One notable name in the passage is Nimrod, apparently the founder of Babel (verse 10). He is described as “a mighty hunter before the Lord” (verse 9).
It is not clear why the order of the names of Shem, Ham and Japhet in verse 1 was reversed with Japhet receiving the first attention in verses 2 to 5. Whatever be the case, it shows that irrespective of your position in the family, God can use you to accomplish His purpose. We also see that from a small family of 8 who survived the flood described in Genesis 7 and 8, God repopulated the entire earth (verss 32).
May we learn to make ourselves available to God, so that He can use us to accomplish His purpose. Do you have a personal relationship with God?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to be my brothers’ keeper, Amen!
WELCOME TO THE SECOND HALF OF 2024. HAPPY NEW MONTH OF JULY
