TOPIC:BEWARE OF GREED
READ: 1 TIMOTHY 6:6-10 (NKJV)
6. Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
7. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.
9. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
THE MESSAGE:
Greed, simply put, is a selfish or excessive desire for more than what is needed or deserved, especially of money, wealth, food or other possessions. Greed comes when one finds it difficult to distinguish between needs and wants. Many people tend to run after their wants rather than their needs. When you begin to desire for wants rather than needs, then greed comes in. Paul said Now godliness with contentment is great gain (verse 6). In Luke 12 verse 15, Jesus warned His disciples to take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. Jesus gives cure to greed as seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and every other thing shall be added (Matthew 6:33).
Greed leads to all kinds of evil: internet fraud, embezzlement, looting of the treasury, kidnapping, and all other sorts of vices. To overcome greed, you must get rid of the desire to be rich at all costs. People craving to be rich can be caught in an endless cycle that only ends in ruin and destruction.
PRAYER: Lord, deliver me from greed in Jesus name. Amen.
