TOPIC: HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST!

READ: MATTHEW 21: 1-13 (NKJV)

21:1. Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

21:2. saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose [them] and bring [them] to Me.

21:3. “And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”

21:4. All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

21:5. “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ “

21:6. So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.

21:7. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set [Him] on them.

21:8. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread [them] on the road.

21:9. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed [is] He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!”

21:10. And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?”

21:11. So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”

21:12. Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.

21:13. And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ “

THE MESSAGE:

Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem is presented in our text. A large crowd of disciples and admirers accompanied Him, praising God and shouting “Hosanna in the highest!”. A part of the crowd spread their clothes or palm branches on the road as a mark of honour. Rather than riding on a horse as kings and great men would normally do, Jesus rode on a borrowed young donkey (John 12: 14). It was only after Jesus’ resurrection that the disciples understood that all they did on that first Palm Sunday were in fulfilment of the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. It is observed that the donkey owners released them when told that the Lord needed them. We also note the gross abuse and misuse to which the people had subjected the Lord’s temple.

Identify some of the “donkeys” in your possession that the Lord has need of. They could be time, talents or other resources. Please be willing to make them available for the Master’s use. Is the Lord’s temple abused today? Yes, in the form of commercialisation of the Lord’s vineyard, misappropriation of Church funds, among others. Do not defile your body which is the temple of the Lord (1 Corinthians 3: 16-17). Praise and shout Hosanna today and always!

PRAYER: O Lord, as I celebrate Palm Sunday today, may You triumph in my life, and remove every defilement in me.
