(Epiphany 4)
TOPIC: THE CROSS: THE FOUNDATION OF SALVATION
READ: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:18 -25 (NKJV)

18. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
20. Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21. For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
22. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;
23. but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,
24. but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
25. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

THE MESSAGE:

The Jews believed that anyone who is hung on the cross/tree is under God’s curse (Deuteronomy 21:23). In spite of Isaiah 53, they could never envisage a suffering Messiah. They sought for a sign that would prove that the Prophet or Messenger was from God. To them, a crucified Christ indicated weakness, not power. They looked for a Messiah who would restore the kingdom of David, not one who would die on the cross (verse 22; Matthew 16:1-4). To the Jews, this message of the cross is a stumbling block and to the Greeks, foolishness, but to those who are called (both Jews and Greeks); Christ is the power and wisdom of God (verses 22-24).

The total debt for sin was paid on the Cross, thereby granting pardon to guilty men and at the same time, vindicating the justice of God which stands out as the wisest and most remarkable plan of all time. The cross is the foundation of the Christian message. It is the place of reconciliation. Jesus suffered and died on the Cross just to save you from eternal damnation. Come to Him in repentance now without delay before it is too late.

PRAYER: Jesus keep me near the Cross; and help me walk with You day to day, till I reach Heaven. Amen.

HAPPY SUNDAY TO YOU!
