DATE: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2023
(St. Matthew’s Day)
TOPIC: GOD HAS NOT GIVEN UP ON YOU
READ: MATTHEW 9:9-13 (NKJV)
9:9. As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.
9:10. Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, [that] behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.
9:11. And when the Pharisees saw [it,] they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
9:12. When Jesus heard [that,] He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
9:13. “But go and learn what [this] means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

THE MESSAGE:
Note that Jesus’ mission on earth was to save sinners and He will go to any length to do this. He waited under the heat of the sun to convert the Samaritan woman. God has the ability to turn a sinner to a saint. This was the case of Matthew. Matthew, before he was called by Jesus, had an occupation, which was to collect taxes for the government. The business of tax-collecting wasn’t a sin, but the manner in which the tax collectors exerted much force and usury made them hated and designated ‘sinners.’ God will not give up on anyone!
In our text, Matthew was converted and later made an apostle by Jesus Christ. Despite his past dubious trade, Jesus did not reject him but accepted him. God is reminding us that we need to return to the call to fish for lost souls and in doing this, resist the temptation of tagging some people ‘too lost’ to be saved. In fact, it seems that those who were ‘too lost’ become ‘too saved’ and show much love to the Master. Now, if you are ‘too lost’, definitely you can be ‘too saved’ by Jesus Christ. Hear His call as He called Matthew. Leave all and follow Him as Matthew did and you will never regret it.
PRAYER: Merciful Father, please save my soul and restore my heart to seek the lost. Amen
