TOPIC: WORTHY FAMILY HERITAGE
READ: 2 TIMOTHY 1:1-7 (NKJV)

1. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
2. To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, [and] peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3. I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as [my] forefathers [did,] as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day,
4. greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy,
5. when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
6. Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

THE MESSAGE:

Paul was a mentor to Timothy and a host of others whom he brought up in the Lord. The way he addressed Timothy as a beloved son, (verse 2), true son (1 Timothy 1:2), my son (2 Timothy 2:1), showed a very deep affection that existed between a father and a son, though Paul was not his biological father. Paul was very proud of Timothy as his spiritual son. He poured his entire being into Timothy in order to replicate himself and Timothy never disappointed Paul’s confidence. Paul commended the genuine faith deposited into Timothy and which was transmitted from his mother through the grandmother. This is a challenge to present day families.

Psalm 78:1-6 talks about fathers teaching their children the commandments of the Lord which they will also teach their own children. This is the greatest heritage a father or mother can transfer to their children. Wealth is good but can be squandered after a parent dies but sound training of children with the word of God outlives everything. Proverbs 22:6 enjoins parents to train up their children the way they should go so that when they grow they will not depart from it. This was seen in the life of Timothy. What legacy are you leaving for your children?

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, may I set a good example for my children to emulate.
