TOPIC: The Danger of Being A False Prophet or Priest

READ: Jeremiah 20:1-6 King James Version (KJV)

  1. Now Pashhur the son of Immer, the priest who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord , heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.
  2. Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord .
  3. And it happened on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord has not called your name Pashhur, but Magor-Missabib.
  4. For thus says the Lord : ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon and slay them with the sword.
  5. Moreover I will deliver all the wealth of this city, all its produce, and all its precious things; all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, who will plunder them, seize them, and carry them to Babylon.
  6. And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. You shall go to Babylon, and there you shall die, and be buried there, you and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied lies.’ ”

THE MESSAGE:

Yesterday, we discussed God’s reaction to a stubborn, unrepentant heart. Today, God brings us to the issue of His reaction to deceitful workers (ministers, priests and pastors).

In this passage, God pronounced judgment on Judah and on a false priest, Pashhur, for deceiving the nation. Pashhur would be a terror to himself and his friends; he would be taken to Babylon in captivity and die there. The people of Judah would also be taken captive and some killed. Their wealth and treasures would be plundered and taken by their captors.
We have to be careful these days of confusion and scrambling for recognition by some of the modern prophets and apostles who dish out conflicting messages with questionable origins. God warned us in 1 John 4:1 do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

The offices of Prophets, Apostles, Evangelists, Teachers, and Pastors are unique and the occupiers must be careful how they handle it and be sure they are truly called by God. If you deceive people because they trust you, your punishment will be like that of Pashhur. You stand the danger of bringing calamity to yourself, your hearers and our nation if you deceive people in the name of God.

PRAYER: Lord, may You help me not to use Your name to deceive my hearers. Amen
