TOPIC: THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST
READ: COLOSSIANS 1:13-20 (NKJV)

13. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed [us] into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
14. in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
15. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
16. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
17. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
18. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
19. For it pleased [the Father that] in Him all the fullness should dwell,
20. and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

THE MESSAGE:

Paul, continuing his prayers for the Colossian Church, praises the Lordship of Christ over creation and redemption and analyses the works of Christ, explaining that Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God (verse 15a). “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature” (Hebrews 1:3a, ESV). The phrase ‘first born over all creation’ does not mean Christ was created, rather He existed eternally with the Father and the Holy Ghost and created all things for Himself, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers(verse 16). Many Colossians greatly feared evil spirits and called on angels for help and protection (Colossians 2:18).As a result of this, Paul reminded them of Christ’s supremacy in dealing with demonic powers (Colossians 2:15).

Just as God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 14:30), He has now delivered us from Satan and the powers of evil (Acts 26:18) and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, having redeemed us through His blood and forgiven our sins. Christ continually sustains His creation, preventing it from disintegrating. (verse 17) Hebrews 1:3 (ESV) says “…and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” He is the head of the body, the Church, who is the beginning, the first born from the dead that in all things He may have the pre-eminence. Jesus not only bears God’s glory, but all that God is also dwells in Him. Jesus is God. The basis of Christ’s reign of peace is the blood of His Cross.

PRAYER: Help me Oh God to fully understand what You have done for me on the Cross and appropriate it in my life. Amen.
