TOPIC: DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMAND
READ: JUDGES 2:1-5 (NKJV)

1. Then the Angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: “I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you.
2. ‘And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this?
3. “Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be [thorns] in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’ “
4. So it was, when the Angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.
5. Then they called the name of that place Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the LORD.

THE MESSAGE:

As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, God gave an express instruction and command to the Israelites in verse 2: “And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.” They did not heed to the voice of God and He was not pleased. They decided to cut corners and use their own wisdom to operate. God took a hard-line against them. In verse 3, He said: “…I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.” Thank God they found the solution to their problem. They cried to the Lord (verse 4).

James 2:10 says “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” How many of God’s commands have you disobeyed? It is not by your own efforts that you can keep the commandments of God. It is through the power got by accepting Jesus as Lord and personal Saviour and becoming a child of God (John 1:12). God does not take kindly to disobedience of any kind –“small or great!” He told Saul that rebellion is as the sin of witch-craft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry (1 Samuel 15:23). We must be careful.

PRAYER: May You empower me, Oh Lord to dedicate my life to obeying Your commands all the days of my life.
