TOPIC: LEANING ON GOD

READ: JEREMIAH 10:17-24 (NKJV)17. Gather up your wares from the land, O inhabitant of the fortress!18. For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will throw out at this time The inhabitants of the land, And will distress them, That they may find [it so.”]19. Woe is me for my hurt! My wound is severe. But I say, “Truly this [is] an infirmity, And I must bear it.”

20. My tent is plundered, And all my cords are broken; My children have gone from me, And they [are] no more. [There is] no one to pitch my tent anymore, Or set up my curtains.21. For the shepherds have become dull-hearted, And have not sought the LORD; Therefore they shall not prosper, And all their flocks shall be scattered.

22. Behold, the noise of the report has come, And a great commotion out of the north country, To make the cities of Judah desolate, a den of jackals.23. O LORD, I know the way of man [is] not in himself; [It is] not in man who walks to direct his own steps.24. O LORD, correct me, but with justice; Not in Your anger, lest You bring me to nothing.

THE MESSAGE:Our text today draws attention to the need to completely depend on God. Some people erroneously believe that they are in control of their lives. They believe that their steps in life are in their power to direct. Others attribute their success in life to their smartness in business, security arrangements, social connections, academic intelligence and eloquence. Some of us believe that the reason we overcame the COVID-19 pandemic is because we stuck to the guidelines.

It would be most unfortunate if we divorce God from the centre of it all. It is God who is in charge and total control of our lives (Acts 17:28). Prophet Jeremiah affirmed that God’s ability to direct our lives is far superior to our own ability (verse 23). Our knowledge of total dependence on God should teach us to be careful how we live because our lives are not in our hands but in God’s hands.

The likes of king Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:29-31), king Herod (Acts 12.21-23) and the rich fool (Luke 12.13-21) were humbled under the mighty hands of God. Let us humble ourselves and learn to depend on God. As we step out today, let us acknowledge God in all our ways and lean not on our own understanding (Proverbs 3.3-5).

PRAYER: Sovereign Lord, grant me the grace to understand and always submit to Your Will in Jesus name. Amen
