TOPIC: OPEN OUR EYES, O LORD!

READ: LUKE 24:25 – 32 (NKJV)25. Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!26. “Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”27. And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.28. Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.29. But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.30. Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke [it,] and gave it to them.31. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.32. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

THE MESSAGE:Jesus spoke very sternly to the disciples because they were “slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken” (verse 25). But He did not stop there. To clear their unbelief and enable them benefit from the vast riches in God’s word, He expounded to them the Old Testament Messianic prophecies, for which their hearts burned within them (verses 27, 32). At the end, their eyes were opened, and they could help others to believe (verses 31, 35). Are your eyes opened to read and understand God’s word today? The Pharisees in Matthew 22:29 were mistaken because they did not know the Scriptures or the power of God. In Acts 8:30-35, the Ethiopian Eunuch did not understand the Scriptures until Philip explained them to him at the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Similarly, the religious people referenced by Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:14-16 did not understand the scriptures because “their minds were blinded…Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” May we therefore turn fully to the Lord Jesus Christ so that our hearts will be opened. As new born babies, we must desire milk – God’s word daily – so that we may be nourished spiritually (Psalm 119:20).PRAYER: O Lord, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from your law” (Psalm 119:18).
