TOPIC: ESCAPE FROM GOD’S ANGER
READ: NAHUM 3:12-19 (NKJV)
12. All your strongholds are fig trees with ripened figs: If they are shaken, They fall into the mouth of the eater.
13. Surely, your people in your midst are women! The gates of your land are wide open for your enemies; Fire shall devour the bars of your gates.
14. Draw your water for the siege! Fortify your strongholds! Go into the clay and tread the mortar! Make strong the brick kiln!
15. There the fire will devour you, The sword will cut you off; It will eat you up like a locust. Make yourself many—like the locust! Make yourself many— like the swarming locusts!
16. You have multiplied your merchants more than the stars of heaven. The locust plunders and flies away.
17. Your commanders are like swarming locusts, And your generals like great grasshoppers, Which camp in the hedges on a cold day; When the sun rises they flee away, And the place where they are is not known.
18. Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; Your nobles rest in the dust. Your people are scattered on the mountains, And no one gathers them.
19. Your injury has no healing, Your wound is severe. All who hear news of you Will clap their hands over you, For upon whom has not your wickedness passed continually?
THE MESSAGE:
Yesterday, we pointed out that God is a God of both love and judgment. He punishes sin and His eyes are purer than to behold iniquity. The concluding portion of the prophecy of Nahum which we have been going through for the past few days is surprisingly terrifying. It is clear from our text today that God leaves no way of escape for the city of Nineveh that had once been treated as a beloved of the Lord, having received abundant mercy. God was set to confront Nineveh with such afflictions as weakening her army and opening her gates to the enemy (Nahum 3:13); cause fire outbreak that would bring colossal disaster (verse 15); paralyze the commercial and economic life of the city (verse 15b); cause the people to labour in vain (verses 16-17); and so on. Little wonder the Bible says, It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrew 10: 31).
Beloved of the Lord, the love side of God is what we should always seek to see and experience by our continual loyalty and obedience to Him. The judgment side of God is so terrible that one should have nothing to do with it. The only way to escape God’s anger is to keep to the track of His will and never go back for whatever reason (Luke 9: 62; Hebrew 10: 38b).
PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me grace to always obey You so that I may constantly experience Your love.
