DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE

CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)

DATE: THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2024

TOPIC: JESUS – A TRUE COMFORTER

READ: JOHN 11: 17-29 (NKJV)

11:17. So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

11:18. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.

11:19. And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

11:20. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

11:21. Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

11:22. “But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

11:23. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

11:24. Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

11:25. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

11:26. “And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

11:27. She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

11:28. And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.”

11:29. As soon as she heard [that,] she arose quickly and came to Him.

THE MESSAGE:

The death of Lazarus increased the pain and agony of his direct family and the entire neighbourhood and several sympathisers came around to offer words of comfort to Mary and Martha. Unfortunately, their words of comfort were not enough to assuage the loss. Jesus was also available for His friends in their hour of agony and pain – He cared not only for their spiritual life but also for their emotional well-being. He came with the word of assurance to Mary and Martha that “though he was dead, yet shall he live” (verse 25). Jesus spoke to their faith, directing their attention to His power, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.” He has the power of life and death and wasn’t just comforting them, but asking them to trust Him. This is empathy and not just sympathy and pity for the crowd. What a great lesson for Christian leaders in a counseling hour!

Our great Comforter is ever near us in our hour of need. Are you hurt, depressed or going through the agony and pain of the loss of loved ones? Jesus will not only comfort but also give you a life that death cannot conquer. All you need to do is to commit your life to Him as a true Comforter and trust in His grace of comfort.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, let Your comforting Spirit take away all my agony today in Jesus’ Name
