THE DAILY FOUNTAIN

DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE

CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)

DATE: SUNDAY, MARCH 03, 2024

(3rd Sunday In Lent)

TOPIC: NOT TO US, NOR ANY IDOLS

READ: PSALM 115: 1-7 (NKJV)

115:1. Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, But to Your name give glory, Because of Your mercy, Because of Your truth.

115:2. Why should the Gentiles say, “So where [is] their God?”

115:3. But our God [is] in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.

115:4. Their idols [are] silver and gold, The work of men’s hands.

115:5. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see;

115:6. They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell;

115:7. They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat.

THE MESSAGE:

Psalm 115 is one of the psalms used by the Jews during Passover celebrations and possibly sung by Jesus and His disciples the night He was betrayed, arrested, and crucified. The psalm ascribes all glory to God (not to self or idols), in all things. It excluded any forms of boasting (verse 1); it makes no room for projecting self-merit or self-glory, but glory is centered on God.

Rick Warren began his best-seller book, The Purpose Driven Life with, “It’s not about you.” This is the meaning of Psalm 115: 1 “Not to us, LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory.” Have we received any Mercy? Success? Glory? Grace? Say not, “The power of my hand has gotten this wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:17) nor, “For my righteousness, the Lord has done these great and kind things for me” (Deuteronomy 9: 4). Our words should be, ‘Not to us Lord!’ We must take courage in God that He alone can do what we are asking for and not any idol or god. For us to do this, however, we must have the right relationship with God. It is a life-long journey which does not happen overnight. We also like Jesus, must learn to pray, “Not my will, but yours be done!” (Luke 22: 42).

PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive me in any way I trusted in idols or self-merit. Not my will Lord, but Yours be done
