READ: MATTHEW 5:1-9 (NKJV)

5:1. And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.

5:2. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

5:3. “Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:4. Blessed [are] those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.

5:5. Blessed [are] the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.

5:6. Blessed [are] those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.

5:7. Blessed [are] the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.

5:8. Blessed [are] the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

5:9. Blessed [are] the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.

THE MESSAGE:

The beatitudes are a set of teachings that Jesus gave to His disciples on kingdom principles. This teaching is generally called “The Sermon on the Mount” and deals with the believer’s lifestyle or attitude. The teaching contradicts worldly principles and each begins with ‘Blessed’, which means to be happy or to be envied and spiritually prosperous. For instance, in verse 3, the first principle addresses the poor in spirit which signifies those who realise their need for God and long for spiritual things. This group would possess the kingdom of God as a reward. Those who mourn, identifies people who grieve over sin and are broken in heart. They shall be comforted as a reward (verse 4).

Take time and meditate on the passage to identify the earthly and eternal rewards in each verse. You will find that godly character attracts both earthly and heavenly rewards. These teachings which are not optional for believers, were taught to those who went up to the mountain with Jesus. So a true disciple should be ready to sacrifice, move away from the crowd and make out quality time to be with Jesus. This experience will enable such a disciple to be taught personally by the Spirit of God. Such intimate periods with the Lord will transform and empower us to obey His teachings through the power of a new life in Christ as helped by the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER: Father, may I not be found wanting in any of these attitudes
