(Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Trinity)

TOPIC: THE AWESOME GOD!

READ: PSALM 76: 1-12 (NKJV)

76:1. In Judah God [is] known; His name [is] great in Israel.

76:2. In Salem also is His tabernacle, And His dwelling place in Zion.

76:3. There He broke the arrows of the bow, The shield and sword of battle. Selah

76:4. You [are] more glorious and excellent [Than] the mountains of prey.

76:5. The stouthearted were plundered; They have sunk into their sleep; And none of the mighty men have found the use of their hands.

76:6. At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob, Both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep.

76:7. You, Yourself, [are] to be feared; And who may stand in Your presence When once You are angry?

76:8. You caused judgment to be heard from heaven; The earth feared and was still,

76:9. When God arose to judgment, To deliver all the oppressed of the earth. Selah

76:10. Surely the wrath of man shall praise You; With the remainder of wrath You shall gird Yourself.

76:11. Make vows to the LORD your God, and pay [them;] Let all who are around Him bring presents to Him who ought to be feared.

76:12. He shall cut off the spirit of princes; [He is] awesome to the kings of the earth.

THE MESSAGE:

This Psalm is the testimony to God’s dealings in the life of the Israelites -“God’s name is known in Judah and great in Israel” (verse 1). God performed great wonders when He delivered Israel (over two million people) from slavery in Egypt, after 430 years, and led them with the pillar of fire by night and pillar of cloud by day. He parted the Red Sea and for them and sank their Egyptian host who pursued after them. He defeated great kings who attacked them as they marched through the wilderness and fed them with manna for forty years as their clothes and sandals did not wear out (Deuteronomy 29: 5). He gave them water from the rock when they were thirsty and finally led them to the land He had promised their forefathers.

How can we spread the name of the Lord in our time?

(i) By teaching the word of the Lord to our children (Deuteronomy 6: 6-9);

(ii) Preaching the Word (2 Timothy 4: 2);

(iii) Sharing testimonies of God’s dealings with us to others (Revelation 12: 11);

(iv) Writing down what God has done (Psalm 68: 11);

(v) Witnessing – telling others about Jesus (Acts 1: 8);

(vi) Living for Him – our character (1 Peter 3: 1). What is your testimony? Is God great and known in your life, home and community?
