TOPIC: THE POWER OF I AM

READ: JOHN 18:1-11 (NKJV)

18:1. When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.

18:2. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.

18:3. Then Judas, having received a detachment [of troops,] and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

18:4. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

18:5. They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am [He.”] And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.

18:6. Now when He said to them, “I am [He,”] they drew back and fell to the ground.

18:7. Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

18:8. Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am [He.] Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”

18:9. that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

18:10. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

18:11. So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”

THE MESSAGE:

Just after Jesus’ high Priestly Prayer (John 17), a weapon-carrying mob came to arrest Him. The Garden setting evokes both the beginning and end of human history (Genesis 2:8; Revelation 22:1-5), however, Christ’s obedience contrasts with the disobedience of Adam (Philippians 2:8). Judas arrived to identify Jesus so He could be arrested and Jesus demonstrated His power by flooring the entire squadron of soldiers with a word (John 18:6), protected His disciples, and then submittéd to His enemies. At the mention of ‘I AM He’ those who came to arrest Jesus went backward and fell to the ground. I AM is God’s name and the power in the name is unfathomable. God revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush as I AM that I AM interpreted from the Hebrew Ehye Asher Ehye. This incident shows that Jesus and the Father are one, bearing the same name.

Peter cut off the right ear of Malchus the high priest’s servant but Jesus said to him, “Put your sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?” (verse 11). Christ pointed out that He could summon “twelve legions of angels” – a force of about 72,000 (Matthew 26:53) to His own defence. Given the immense power of a single angel (2 Kings 19:35), this is another instance of Christ confirming that He went willingly to this fate. “Not by power; not by might but by my Spirit, saith the Lord” (Zechariah 4:6).

PRAYER: Father; thank You for giving Your only Begotten Son Jesus to die for our sin. Amen
