DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE

CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)

DATE: SUNDAY, JANUARY 19, 2025

(Epiphany 2)

TOPIC: BOUGHT WITH A PRICE

READ: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:11-20 (NKJV)

6:11. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

6:12. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

6:13. Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body [is] not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

6:14. And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.

6:15. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make [them] members of a harlot? Certainly not!

6:16. Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body [with her?] For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”

6:17. But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit [with Him.]

6:18. Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.

6:19. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit [who is] in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

6:20. For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

THE MESSAGE:

Christian integrity, self-control, and virtuous living seem to be the central message of our passage today. Paul exhorts the Corinthian Christians to shun immoral living and submit to God’s authority. As Christians, we are different and do not operate on the same level as unbelievers. Our lifestyle must be guided by the Holy Spirit who lives in us and propels us to live godly lives. The Scriptures tell us that God, in Christ, has delivered us from darkness and translated us into His kingdom of light (1 Peter 2:9). In verse 20 of our text, the price for our salvation is the pure blood of Jesus. He took our place, and though He had no sin, God made Him become sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (1Corinthians 5:21).

Many things may be lawful for us to do, but they are also self-glorifying rather than God-glorifying. Therefore, Paul advises us to avoid such activities, including sexual promiscuity. Unbelievers can afford to cheat, lower standards, deceive, kill, and compromise, but we cannot because we have already been purchased. We now belong to God, and it is the principles of His kingdom that rule in our lives now. In fact, always remember that you are now a citizen of heaven, sent as an ambassador on a mission on earth.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to shine forth Your light day by day, Amen!
